Cuccinelli: The first shutdown casualty
The Washington Post ^ | October 29 | Jennifer Rubin

Posted on 10/29/2013 8:37:26 AM PDT by Kenny

“Democrat Terry McAuliffe has opened a double-digit lead over Republican Ken Cuccinelli II in the race for Virginia governor, in a new poll capturing increasing dissatisfaction among voters with Cuccinelli’s party and his conservative views.” Cuccinelli trails by 12 points overall and is behind among women by 24 points (in 2009, Gov. Bob McDonnell won the women’s vote). Cuccinelli trails in voter-rich Northern Virginia by 18 points (McDonnell won in the D.C. suburbs). Without the Libertarian Robert Sarvis in the race, Cuccinelli still trails by 11 points. Cuccinelli is too conservative, according to 54 percent of the voters.

This surprises no one who lives in Northern Virginia — where the anti-Cuccinelli ads are prominent and where women, business people and moderate Republicans are more likely to roll their eyes or respond with utter disdain when asked what they think of Cuccinelli. People who have never in their lives voted against a Republican at the top of the ticket will tell you in essence, ”I have my limits.” They use words like “extreme” or even “nut” to describe him. It’s not merely that they won’t vote for him; they in effect want you to know he’s not their kind of governor. (“I’m a conservative, but. . . ” they often begin.)

It will be popular to blame the entire fiasco on Cuccinelli’s campaign. But that is delusional. Sure, Cuccinelli could have shifted positions or declared he was going to forgo social issues off-putting to moderates or come out clearly for the transportation bill — but then he wouldn’t have been the right-wing darling that he is. The problem is not Cuccinelli personally or his campaign more generally; it is that he embodies the traits non-conservatives and some conservatives dislike about the GOP these days.

If Virginia votes for Fast Terry, I hope they enjoy the Blagojevich-levels of corruption and embezzlement.

Which means... Virginia, a cradle of American liberty, the birthplace of seven U.S. Presidents, and a state once led by luminaries such as Patrick Henry, John Tyler, James Monroe and Thomas Jefferson... has finally succumbed to the narcotic of big government and allowed itself to kneel at the feet of the liberal behemoth.

Oh, we'll get that... and worse. This state is going to be the laughingstock of the country.. and deservedly so.

Exactly...Do you think bill and hill are doing that for free? I saw 41%-40%...this is a tight race, and if Cooch was smart he’d be running ads with a quote from McLawless about him supporting Obumbacare!

I notice rags like the WP throw around the word ‘conservative’, but don’t bother to outline what his positions are and WHY.

Do ‘women’ really vote as a block as the liberals would have us think? If so then they’re saying women are primarily emotional beings that allow others do their thinking for them - a stereotype they supposedly are trying to shed. Maybe unlimited sex and abortions trumps dignity I guess.

It’s like the rest of the country.. the densely populated areas are filled with government dependent liberal scum, the sparsely populated areas that work, are self supporting, don’t need government help are conservative.

What’s driving Virginia to the liberal scum side is northern Virginia and basically anything on the east coast side where the majority lives.

“If ye love wealth better than liberty,
the tranquility of servitude
better than the animating contest of freedom,
go home from us in peace.
We ask not your counsels or your arms.
Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you.
May your chains set lightly upon you,
and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.”

Samuel Adams

I was thinking the same thing...why would 0 be campaigning for FastTerry, if his numbers are so great?

Who's campaigning with Cuccinelli this week, anybody know?

Blaming his defeat on the shutdown is bogus. The simple answer is that VA is a purple state trending blue. The demographics have changed rapidly, especially in NoVA which is where one-third of of the voters live (and it is the fastest growing part of the state) and votes like NJ or NY.

Any Rep running statewide is facing an uphill battle. It has nothing to do with the shutdown.

The Libertarian vote is taken from Cuccinelli. There is no way for a conservative to win with Libertarians taking away 10% of the vote.
