A new report shows that 20 percent of Jewish households in the New York metropolitan area are poor, a figure only marginally lower than the rate in the general population.
The report released Thursday by UJA-Federation of New York found more than 560,000 people living in 200,000 poor or near-poor Jewish households, a figure that represents a doubling of the number of people living in poor Jewish households since 1991, despite only a 14 percent increase in the Jewish population. The report also found nearly half of children in Jewish households live in poor or near-poor conditions.
Among all residents of the New York area, some 25 percent live in poor households, the report said.
“The sheer scale of Jewish poverty in the New York area is immense, and the Jewish community has a sacred responsibility to care for those in need,” said John Ruskay, UJA-Federation’s executive vice president and CEO.

A state criminal probe and a city DOI investigation is looking into massive govt fraud and political hanky-panky at the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty. NYC has suspended millions of dollars in funding following a state criminal probe of its former CEO, William Rapfogel.....whose wife Judy is a mover and shaker inside Speaker Sheldon Silver's Albany office.
Authorities said Rapfogel kept at least $1 million in kickbacks for himself with the rest going to unnamed co-conspirators – and paid no taxes on the ill-gotten gains.
Investigators seized about $400,000 in cash Rapfogel had stashed in his home, they said.
THIS MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD Judy said "she did not know" about her husband's $100,000 cash gift to their son purchase a house. Judy musta thought the Home Depot fairy gave her son the house.
Allegedly Rapfogel extorted kickbacks from Met Council’s insurance agent and directed campaign contributions from the insurance agent to "favored politicians."
Met Council fired Rapfogel -- its CEO since 1992 — after investigating an anonymous complaint about “financial irregularities and apparent misconduct.” Rapfogel, himself, issued a startling statement of apology for wrongdoing without providing specifics. The agency is searching for a new CEO -- but sources said the damage already done will be devastating.....(ergo the rescue effort seen here).
The Met Council on Jewish Poverty w/ a $33 million budget sucks-up up millions of federal, state and city tax dollars. ......and gets millions of dollars in private donations. The council has received $16.5 million in state funds (w/ Sheldon Silver's help), and another $10 million from the City Council since 2009.

MORE POVERTY Rapfogel was pulling more than $400,000 in salary and benefits (that we know of) heading an organization that supposedly provided "services to the needy.'
Rapfogel's wife, Judy, has been Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver’s chief of staff for 37 years---Speaker Silver suspiciously directed millions of tax dollars to the Met Council.
The city DOI is conducting its own probe to determine if city tax funds provided to Met Council were stolen, or used for fraudulent, or corrupt purposes. That could include Rapfogel money-laundering tax funds, and aiding and abetting pay-to-play schemes involving tax funds in exchange for campaign contributions to pols.

It’s the Haredi Jews in places like Kiryas Joel. The ultra-orthodox are the only source of Jewish population growth in the US. They have large families, eight or more children, and the fathers are often perpetual students with low or no incomes. Kiryas Joel is on paper one of the poorest places in NY.

LOL. Income reported isn’t necessarily total income. Very closed society, at least in the ultra religous sects. They take care of one another.
nothing against the Jewish, but most Asians are pretty darn smart and hardworking. And every other ethnicity has its hard-working, highly intelligent members.
