IN CASE OF CONFLICTING INFORMATION... THE MORE CONSERVATIVE INFORMATION SHOULD BE USED FOR SAFETY.

Good advice even when not about tsunamis.

Here is the English JMA home page for all the info on Japan earthquakes, weather, etc:

Japan Meteorological Agency:

http://www.jma.go.jp/jma/indexe.html

How this one was felt across Japan:

http://www.jma.go.jp/en/quake/00000000095.html

The intensity dots are linked such that you can keep zooming in on the reports at their individual source locations.

While this one was well off-shore and not felt too strongly on Honshu and Hokkaido, the "big one" of 2011 was preceded [by only a day or two] by several strong off shore EQs, a couple of them 7+.

I doubt it...lol

No the quake was mild on shore...thanks to it being on the Pacific Plate.

But the situation needs to be watched for sure.

The magnitude has been fixed as 6.8 to 7.1 per the latest Japanese information so massive may be an overstatement. I was there for the 2011 disaster and the shaking went on for at least 30 seconds. Even well above the ground that was truly terrifying.

I was always told to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. ;) The USGS most of the time downgrades EQs for some reason?

No the quake was mild on shore...thanks to it being on the Pacific Plate.

Since the Philippine quake occurred between two plates, kind of isolating it, that might be the reason for the low seismic levels you saw?

Fine here (Chiba).. was low-mid level for me).. lasted about 2 minutes. Started as a small tremble, them worked it’s way up. I don’t think more than a 5 from here.

I am on high ground, so I shouldn’t have to worry about a tsunami.. Ronen may though..

(We are going through a typhoon at the same time, pray for the people hardest hit (up north again)).

We knew it was coming.

Here in the South Bay of Los Angeles, there have been two recent unusual fish sightings in the last week. Twice, oar fish have been found. They are deep water fish that, according to Japanese tradition, are typically only seen when there is going to be an earthquake.

There is a lot of practical wisdom hidden in old stories from the days when people paid closer attention to natural clues.

Actually global cooling increased the Pacific ocean density such that the point pressure per square kilometer off japan induced the quake.

Fine here. Just a rattle or two. Didn’t even wake up the missus. Tsunami warning is in effect for Chiba and the coast, including Fukushima, but it should be a small one. If the defenses have been repaired, no danger to the reactors, let’s all pray on that point.

We are worried about the spent fuel pool of reactor 4, which is way off the ground and held together by duct tape.
