We have long assumed that the infestation of special interest money in Washington is at the root of so much that ails our politics. But what if weve had it wrong? What if instead of being bribed by wealthy interests, politicians are engaged in a form of legal extortion designed to extract campaign contributions?
Consider this: of the thousands of bills introduced in Congress each year, only roughly 5 percent become law. Why do legislators bother proposing so many bills? What if many of those bills are written not to be passed but to pressure people into forking over cash?
This is exactly what is happening. Politicians have developed a dizzying array of legislative tactics to bring in money.
Take the maneuver known inside the Beltway as the tollbooth. Here the speaker of the House or a powerful committee chairperson will create a procedural obstruction or postponement on the eve of an important vote. Campaign contributions are then implicitly solicited. If the tribute offered by those in favor of the bills passage is too small (or if the money from opponents is sufficiently high), the bill is delayed and does not proceed down the legislative highway.

All lies. King Obamadingaling has transformed Washington DC in to a bastion of peace, truth and honor just like he said he would.
I am SO surprised, I NEVER expected congress critters to act like mobsters or gang bangers.
I need to start over.
If you look at Reid and Pelosi, it’s a matter of public record that they ARE the mafia.
I think the Mafia has more class and this is an insult to the Mafia to be compared to politicians.
Dear New York Times,
No Schitt Sherlock, when did you get your first clue?
You are either the most low information newspaper in history or just plain stupid if you haven't known this for well over 100 years.
Even I have known this for damn near fify years.
They did, at one time. But that’s some time ago. Reid’s connection to the mob Casino business is no secret, neither is the fact that Nancy is married to a mobster heavy.
you mean like income taxes and obozocare??
“What if many of those bills are written not to be passed but to pressure people into forking over cash?” Figured that a long time ago.. Bill gates got by for some time before they knocked on his door..
I knew an honest state rep who told a story
about the start of the legislative session.
One of the first bills to be introduced was
to raise the liquor tax. Then the state liquor distributors would have to lobby the state congress
with free liquor.
He also told a story where he answered a knock at his door to find a liquor lobbyist asking if he needed anything. He declined but found two half-gallons of liquor outside his door when he walked out later.
Sarah Palin has blasted the Lamestream Media from her facebook page for ignoring what is going on in Washington.
This has got to be Front Page and Breaking on Free Republic -- the Extortion that goes on in Washington, DC.
The author of this Op-Ed piece for the New York Times (Peter Schweizer) is the author of the book Sarah Palin refers to...
To compare congress to the mafia is a grave insult...to the mafia.
-The mafia makes no pretense of helping it’s extortion victims.
-The mafia often provides products and services that are in demand.
-The mafia costs less.
-The mafia has better cannoli.
Mention 'extortion' again, and I'll have your legs broken.
