Republican Mike Fasano Delivers Florida House Seat to Democrat Amanda Murphy

Pasco County’s Republican Tax Collector, Mike Fasano, likely provided the margin of victory for liberal Democrat Amanda Murphy yesterday as she narrowly won a special election to replace Fasano in the Florida House of Representatives. Murphy won the election over Republican Bill Gunter by just 300 votes out of nearly 20,000 votes cast.

After resigning his seat in the Florida House to accept appointment as Pasco County Tax Collector, Fasano pledged to remain neutral regarding the special election. During the final weeks of the campaign, however, Fasano broke his promise and campaigned hard for Murphy while aggressively attacking Gunter’s integrity with negative campaigning and unsupported innuendos. ..

Gunter, a longtime public school teacher who lettered for the Florida Gators football team and serves as the senior pastor at a Pasco County church, declined to respond in kind to Fasano’s attacks. Gunter also declined to respond in kind to negative campaign mailers sent out by the Florida Democratic Party.

In the final-week campaign ad attacking Gunter, Fasano never mentioned that Gunter is a Democrat. ...

Fasano, representing House District 34, was the most liberal Republican in the Florida House

Fasano backed Charlie Crist’s independent run for the U.S. Senate over Republican nominee Marco Rubio in 2010, and earlier this year called for Medicaid’s expansion in Florida under the Affordable Care Act.

Not a Dime’s Worth of Difference.

Time for a Second Party.

Let me put it to you this way. In the early 20th century, the only way to win elected office in the South was to run as a Democrat. You had a lot of Democrats who essentially were just running as such to win. Many of them became the Blue dogs and some even jumped ship when the Republicans took over. When Republicans started winning though, a lot of people switched sides and became a Republican only because they wanted to win.

Political parties are too often just a rallying point for people with designs on power.

Yup. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the same thing on a national level. If Paul ran against Hitlery, who do you think McCain would campaign for?

Campaigning for the opposition should bear automatic decertification and removal from the party.

A lot of politicians are just opportunists. It easier to be a democrat opportunist than a republican.

Tax Collectors are elected here in Florida. Since he was appointed he will need to run for the position. Someone from Pasco needs to keep us apprised as to when that will be. We can do some payback! Get them at every stinking level of government.

I remember Gunter was a Democrat in the 1970s and 80s. When did he make the switch?

Georgia is filled with ‘former’ Democrats turned Republicans. That is how we got Isackson, Chambliss, Perdue and Deal.

Good strategy by Democrats - rebrand yourself as Republicans and once in office, vote like a Rat.

declined to respond in kind to Fasano’s attacks.

And that was why he lost.

Passive acceptance of criticism is considered admission of guilt.

Let me think about that for a minute. Let me really go out on a limb. Let me risk everything, including my life, my fortune, my sacred honor (where have I heard that before?) and make a judgement. He will support Hitlery.

Once again, we see a GOP candidate not regarding politics as the street brawl that it is. And that's not just a modern thing; it was the same in Thomas Jefferson's time. Mr. Gunter earned that loss.
