Britain could be hit by power cuts next winter because the electricity supply is already “close to its limits”, experts warn.

Capacity is so stretched that a cold spell, combined with routine problems at one or more plants, could overwhelm the system and see blackouts in 2014-15, their damning report claims.

A major pressure on the National Grid is the forced closure of coal-fired power stations to meet European green directives, the Royal Academy of Engineering says. …

Were they too stupid to leave a couple of coal plants in a ready state in case demand went high?

This is the TINOs, Labour types and LibDems working to actually obey the EU’s “environmental” directives to the letter. (Meanwhile, other countries in the EU flout them with impunity; guess which ones.)

Those problems are not related to trying to uphold a ridiculous “emissions” standard, though.

The real crime is that HMG has been aware for ten years that there was an impending power shortage and NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE. Everyone knows that the only solution is to replace the burnt out nuclear power stations with new ones, but no one wants to take the unpopular decision to give construction the go ahead.

It’s not that the problem is not recognised. The problem is that the existing coal fired and nuclear power stations are nearing the end of their lives (like all plant they wear out over time) and successive UK governments keep deferring the decision to replace them.

I would add that large steam plants require 5-7 days to go from cold boiler to able to power the grid. The greens who seem to be driving this policy do not understand that you cannot just flip a switch.

do not joke, the communists running our country with the willing legion in the House of Lords (aka the US Senate) still have 3 years to bring us to the same condition

imagine our “UMW” miners mining coal all day - to ship to China

then going home to homes they cannot afford to heat.
Appalachia will go back to the 1930’s within 3 years

What about them? Wind power is, and always will be, a useful supplement to our energy needs (at best). I think the UK gets about 2% of its power from wind turbines.
