Cruz is exactly where Churchill was in 1934, in the wilderness even within his own party.
But Churchill prevailed in the end, because he had the truth on his side...Just as Cruz will ultimately prevail. So long as he sticks to his guns. This is a long war, folks.

And it will be even longer if we’re shooting our own generals in the back. How do these trolls not get picked up?

Exactly right. Principled conservatives need to recognize this, and to recognize that the establishment Republicans are the heart of the problem. There will always be a leftist party -- human nature, unfortunately, causes many people to fall for the deception. What is inexcusable is to allow leftists within a purported opposition party.
Ignore the phony R/D ratio. It is irrelevant. The only relevant question is: how can the Republicans be morphed into an effective opposition force? The obvious answer is to oppose, both in primaries and the general election, any liberal with an R next to their name. Do that, and the war becomes winnable. Don't do that, and the war is lost.

Reagan sometime around 1972 would also be a good comparison.
