Cruz’s Hometown Newspaper Regrets Endorsement
ABC News Radio ^ | 10-16-13

(HOUSTON) -- Sen. Ted Cruz’ hometown newspaper, the Houston Chronicle, wishes it could take back its endorsement.

The Chronicle’s editorial board, which endorsed Cruz, R-Texas, in his 2012 race, now says it misses his predecessor, former Republican Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison.
“When we endorsed Ted Cruz in last November’s general election, we did so with many reservations and at least one specific recommendation -- that he follow Hutchison’s example in his conduct as a senator,” the Chronicle said. “Obviously, he has not done so."
“Cruz has been part of the problem in specific situations where Hutchison would have been part of the solution,” the board added.
Cruz, 42, has encouraged his colleagues to resist funding the government unless President Obama’s health care law is rolled back. As a result, he has been on the receiving end of the brunt of anger from his fellow Republicans, not to mention Democrats.

Although Americans say in public opinion polls that they are dissatisfied with the Republican Party’s handling of the shutdown crisis, and predominantly blame the GOP over Democrats, Cruz has staked his political future on this fight.

The Houston Chronicle editorial board made clear Wednesday that it thinks he should emulate Hutchison’s example and spend more time reaching across the aisle.
“We miss her extraordinary understanding of the importance of reaching across the aisle when necessary,” the board wrote. “One reason we particularly believe that Hutchison would make a difference in these hectic days is that if she had kept her seat, Cruz would not be in the Senate.”

What some are hinting at here is pragmatism, that is...if it works, do it. If it seems like it might not work - don’t do it. With this approach, however, principles take a back seat.

The comical is a joke and what they say does not make any difference here in Texas.

So fear that the President would come out stronger should have motivated Cruz and other conservatives to give in instead of fighting?
What do you think they should have done?

Cruz should be President of Texas. We are so wasting our time getting Washington to agree with us.

Houston Chronicle is slobbering all over Wendy Davis and always slobbers all over Sheila Jackson Lee.

Any regrets on these endorsements?

The Cruz endorsement was a head fake, like their endorsement of Romney.

Also, the paper includes a once a week section called “China Daily”. It is a entire section of nothing but Chinese propaganda. Extolls all the wonders of China and their rulers.

What the hell is that about?

What the newspaper is suggesting, however, is most certainly--most clearly not "pragmatism." Let me be very direct.

It was not Senator Cruz who dropped the ball here. It was the failure of the Republican Congressional leadership to adopt a clear approach that could have been sold despite all of the efforts of the Left & the Leftist media to distort the issue. What would that approach have entailed?

First a recognition of why stopping Obamacare should have been the focus. The clear argument got lost in the constant reshuffling of approaches. This was a stupid blunder by the leadership. Here is how the clean approach would have worked:

1. Offer to fund everything else--already approved, at the level approved; and raise the debt ceiling accordngly, at the same time.

2. Explain that Republicans could not fund Obamacare as a matter of coscience, because we believe it to be unconstitutional, immoral, fiscally irresponsible, and a violation of every concept of private rights.

3. Point out that funding measures must originate in the House as a matter of clear Constitutional Law.

4. Point out that if Obama or Reid prevent the funding of anything else, it is they--and they alone--who are holding the Government hostage.

The key to this approach, giving the Republicans the upper hand, is keeping the message simple! We give everything that we can without violating our oaths. The arm twisting for the unpopular measure is where the "holding hostage," comes in--and with it the blame for "no compromise"--since Republicans will have already compromised. (Why & when the House abandoned this approach is where we lost the initiative.)

Doubt a conservative reads the rag. I am thankful Senator Kaye is gone, as she went along to get along. Cruz is a breath of fresh air.

Not even close, Romney was a disaster that cost America a presidency against Carter’s second term, in an election that he couldn’t lose, Cruz is a Senator that has only begun to fight.

Romney won a single election and left office with 34% approval and was a lefty piece of human debris,in half a decade when Cruz runs for reelection, he will cruise to victory, largely by disagreeing and opposing you romneybots.

No matter how you try to sugarcoat it, Cruz got his a** handed to him. He made people (the grassroots) believe it was possible to defund Obamacare when it plainly wasn’t. This was basically always going to be the result. We simply don’t have the numbers. Period.

I like Cruz. I’ve been on the threads arguing against birthers who don’t think he can run for President. But his utter lack of foresight here, a seeming inability to game this out and see where we’d end up......well, it’s pretty disappointing.

He lost and lost badly. His brand is tarnished. He may remain undamaged with the same 5-10% who think Sarah Palin will somehow one day be President, but those people are an extreme minority who are completely out of touch with political reality.

Hello,

What the future holds, IMHO, is an epic melt down of ObamaCare and many (mostly Independents and many Dems) who WILL remember when a few lonely Senators tried to make it stop. Cruz is not done and he could not do it on his own. He did not fail, the GOPe did....

One battle is not the war and sometimes one loss sets up the next battle for success...

I think Cruz did great and of course your reaction is predictable, but regardless of whether you agree with conservatives or the left on whether he won this political branding exercise or lost something, he is in his first year of a six year term.

I love the way that you defend Romney and attack Palin, and are angry about Cruz, some things never change.

The grassroots is fired up, the Romney wing is furious, life is good.

Yeah, because ending entitlements is common place right? The whole reason many people wanted to fight here, even though there was really no chance to succeed, was because once a new entitlement takes hold there is next to zero chance of getting rid of it.

Obamacare will do what the Democrats always wanted it to do . It will create more dependency and change the nature of the country and make it more like Europe.

It's a disaster for certain, but we do not have the numbers to get rid of it. Maybe if we'd won the Senate in 2010 or 2012, but we just ran too many bad candidates like Akin, O'Donnell, etc, to give ourselves a real shot at it.
