Pacific man seeks climate change asylum in New Zealand

WELLINGTON (Reuters) - A Pacific Island man trying to flee rising seas and environmental risks caused by global warming in his home country of Kiribati asked a New Zealand court on Wednesday to let him pursue his claim as a climate change refugee.

The low-lying South Pacific island nation has a population of more than 100,000, but its average height of 2 m. (6-1/2 feet) above sea level makes it one of the countries most vulnerable to rising waters and other climate change effects.

Ioane Teitiota, 37, asked New Zealand's High Court in Auckland to let him appeal a decision that refused him asylum on the grounds his claim fell short of the legal criteria, such as fear of persecution or threats to his life.

Teitiota, who came to New Zealand in 2007 and has three children born there, said he and his family would suffer serious harm if forced to return to Kiribati, because there was no land to which he could safely return.

The High Court on Wednesday reserved its decision.

Last month, leading climate scientists said they were more certain that human activity was the main cause of global warming, which would bring rising sea levels to swamp coasts and low-lying islands.

I wouldn’t want to live on an island that is only 6’ above sea level regardless of the global warming alarmists dire and ridiculous predictions. A good storm turns that island into one big beach. A tsunami would turn it into a sand bar.

More looney than the dude seeking asylum is a wire service and outlet who presents the story as a straight news story, “objectively” standing in the middle of two equally plausable sides.

The looney dude affects about three people in the world.

Yahoo News affects millions of people every day.

Stop focusing on Obama. Stop focusing on the looney guy. Our focus should be on the wire services and media outlets.

CORRECTION

Last month, leading PHONY LYING SOCIALIST climate "scientists" said they were more certain THAT THEY COULD FOOL LOW INFORMATION VOTERS that human activity was the main cause of global warming, which would bring rising sea levels to swamp coasts and low-lying islands.

THERE. FIXED IT

I would think that the “millions of degrees” that major scientist Al gore says are beneath the Earth’s surface would be more of a concern to the tiny islanders.

What if those millions of degree waters should spring up and boil them all!

When Guam tips over(and settled science says it will), they’ll really be screwed.

Isn’t Kiribati the principal island of the Tarawa Atoll?

I looked at going there once. After looking into it, I decided to stay well away. Tiny island, literally PAVED with wall-to-wall little houses- population about 40,000. The beaches are strewn with garbage and raw sewage. It lives mostly on hand-outs from Australia, there’s no economy to speak of.

As previously noted, the island would be highly vulnerable to storm and tsunami damage.

I think he just wants to get away from all that.

Yep. It’s one of the poorest countries.

I agree he that he may just want to escape that dump. It’s quite a shame, as it could be nice. Temperature high/low is 88/77 year round.

This certainly could be the act of a lone deluded nut, but it could also be a test run of the next tactic by the agenda-driven tyrants.
