Sen. Ted Cruz met with roughly 15 to 20 House Republicans for roughly two hours late Monday night at the Capitol Hill watering hole Tortilla Coast.
The group appeared to be talking strategy about how they should respond to a tentative Senate deal to reopen the government and raise the debt ceiling without addressing Obamacare in a substantive way, according to sources who witnessed the gathering. The Texas Republican senator and many of House Republicans in attendance had insisted on including amendments aimed at dismantling Obamacare in the continuing resolution that was intended to avert the current shutdown.
Sources said the House Republicans meeting in the basement of Tortilla Coast with Cruz were some of the most conservative in the House: Reps. Louie Gohmert of Texas, Steve King of Iowa, Jim Jordan of Ohio, Tom Cotton of Arkansas, Raúl Labrador of Idaho, Steve Southerland of Florida, Mark Meadows of North Carolina, and Justin Amash of Michigan.
The group is a collection of members who have often given leadership headaches in recent years by opposing both compromise measures as well as packages crafted by fellow Republicans. And, it seems, leadership unwittingly became aware of the meetup.
While the dinner meeting was held in a private basement room, the group was spotted by Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., who was dining with some other members, including Gregg Harper, R-Miss. McCarthy is a regular at the Capitol Hill watering hole, and a source said he seemed particularly interested in what the group was up to.

Hold firm, patriots. Don’t let the media Leftists and the Wall St. greed merchants stampede you into Reid’s “compromise.” He has called you jihadists and terrorists. In a better day, you would have challenged him to a duel to defend your honor.
I’m glad that we still have some Republicans with some backbone.
At the risk of being shot, skinned and hung out to dry by my fellow FReepers, there is a part of me that sez “let it go and see what happens”. Problem is decent people will get hurt along with the RATscum.
The GOP-e idiots still don't get it...we want them to FIGHT!!!!
I continue to pray for his safety, wisdom, stamina and confidence!---Stay the course, Ted!...We have your back!
Pretty much the last 5 years have been a mushy piece of st.
Blue Bill this POS and send it back to the Senate with a big “FU” on the front!
Stand firm Patriots! Your job is to represent the people! The people have spoken and we DO NOT WANT THIS POS - Obamacare!
Defund it, kill it, do whatever is necessary to end it - NOW!
No one wants to be seen as the folks who caused the dreaded default.
Only one problem with this strategary.....Oct 17th will come and there will be no default. It's a big huge facade.
Only Obozo at this point can cause a default by refusing to pay debt bond obligations. There is plenty of $$$$ to pay our debt obligation.
There will still be folks outta work, folks not getting paid, parks still closed....that sorta stuff, but default is a lie to scare Americans into accepting more and more out of control debt and runaway spending.
Obozo should be impeached on the grounds of deception alone!
Part of me agrees with you. We aren’t going to be able to stop Obamacare, but Obamacare is DOA in the real world. Make sure Obama and the Demscum own it, get what we can by playing hardball, and then watch the train wreck. Even low information voters will feel the very real pain. We just have to make sure WE don’t get the blame for the train wreck. Then take over in 2014 and kill the damn thing.
well said...might just be the right course..
Poll to freep:
Who is more to blame for the federal government shutdown?
Scroll down right side.
That is the part that amazes me.
Many of the people that will be feeling the pain of Obamacare are Democrats.
Does anyone think that these Democrats are going to take this screwing and vote back in the numbnuts who are screwing them?
I agree completely. I’d much rather have the Vitter amendment than the device tax repeal or one-year delay.
1-yr delay is stupid and politically counter-productive.
Let the SHEEPLE have all the Obamacare they voted for. Applied to EVERYONE.
Too late...the blame has been (wrongfully) placed on Ted Cruz and the Tea Party.
I recommend we follow the advice of Rahm Emanuel and "don't let a good crisis go to waste."
No more kicking the can down the road. Double down on the sequester "cuts" (reductions in the growth of spending).
I am wrong that the House already capitulated on the full defund and instead voted to just do the one year delay and eliminate the favorable Congressional subsidies?
(which is a natural part of negotiation here...not saying this out of frustration or anger, I just thought they already moved past that position in subsequent bills sent to the Senate).
