Actually, you malign Chamberlain. England, it’s peacetime army, its obsolete air force, and its people were not yet ready for war, and his only ally, France, was useless, as was proved later. Chamberlain was playing for time to get ready for the war that was expected eventually.
I wouldn’t give Chamberlain that credit, because in the negotiations he was weak and ineffectual, but on his return home bragged of how effective he had been in containing Hitler.
Nobody believed him then, and we should question apologists for him now.
