The WSJ story said there were 3 or 4 full-size supermarkets in the whole city. Wonder what they mean by full-size. We had two fairly large ones in our neighborhood alone.
Went back to Newark to an outdoor jazz concert with some family members a few years ago to show support after a rash of murders. It’s not so bad. Of course I’m from NYC so I’m used to the scary murder rates. You just stay out of the dicey neighborhoods.
To understand Booker’s appeal you have to follow him on Twitter. He is always there for his constituents, a hands-on mayor, always ready to be helpful or informative. It’s a style of governing that has paid off for him in the poll numbers. People who say he’s not governing because he’s always on Twitter don’t get it. He’s governing on Twitter, one constituent at a time. And if you like what he says, that’s his appeal. He stays in touch with the real problems that way too.
I’m wondering where Palin & Levin will be - I heard Ocean County which is not too far from me.
I’m voting for Lonegan - at least it will get him to stop those annoying commercials during Rush’s show!
NJ is too f’ed up to elect an R. For goodness sakes, they sent Lautenberg back.
Gov. Christie is an R but a Retard type.
Is Christie going to be there?
It will be a huge win if Lonegan can pull this out. He was down by 30-40% early on
but has closed to within 12% in one poll in the past week. Still a long ways but
if Lonegan’s internals are correct it is much closer.
Ocean County is a reasonable place to go. Traditionally, it is a "purple" county that can go to either major party.
I work with blacks from Newark that swear no blacks they know will vote for Booker; they thought Sharpe James was much more responsive, and regard Booker as a white liberal. There is no doubt that Newark is not better off with this Obama clone playing politician.
I’ve worked and gone to school in Newark; it is a dump where cops issue BS parking tickets assuming you’ll pay rather than miss a day in work to fight it (possibly unsuccessfully). Since I got one several years ago (and was shocked at how many people regarded it as the norm) I haven’t been to a restaurant in Newark; now if I meet people for business that come in to Newark airport I take them to restaurants in Harrison or my own town (both on the fringe of the reservation). I’ve also declined offers of free tickets to see Devils games in the new arena; I won’t redistribute my wealth in North Zimbabwe.
Attempts to gentrify aren’t working because they can’t provide security; Jersey City booted out its permanent underclass to attract yuppies, while Newark won’t. If they think working whites will expose themselves to the whims of the permanently aggrieved they’re delusional.
I’d imagine most people following Booker on Twitter are leagues away from Newark itself; there is no middle class there except pockets in the north & east, and they don’t speak ingles.
Now that James is out of prison, they can have him back. I see he’s shameless enough to try to get back into politics. Only Nelson Mandela could pull that one off.
I wonder how Booker won if Newark blacks consider him too white. Some accused him of being a Republican. Now he’s a white liberal? I know he has quite a following, which he has built up over the years, so maybe that following will compensate for the ones who can’t decide why they don’t like him. Junior high school jealousy is my guess.
We’ll see what happens next week. I do think sending Palin out there was a mistake. Perry not so much, but she could lose Lonegan a certain number of votes he would otherwise have had.
>> He doesnt shy away from his conservatism, even in NJ.. I admire that.
A lot of obligatory Democrat heritage in the Tri-State that should know better than to support socialism, abortion, and reckless spending.
James always had the black permanent underclass vote; Booker kept trying until his coalition of adult blacks, Hispanics in the north, and Portuguese/Brazilians in the east out-voted them. During the campaign James referred to Booker as “white” and “Jewish”; I guess the James fans might want to see Booker fail (I don’t believe race won’t trump all for them and they’ll vote for Booker anyway).
Sending Palin into NJ was a sign that Lonegan had nothing to lose; Booker doesn’t mind appealing to race so Lonegan can play his race card. too.
Bear in mind that Newark itself is a small city; my town just to the northeast has 1/6 the number of people. Unlike NYC in NY state politics, Newark doesn’t have a big voice in NJ; if it did we’d have had a black governor years ago.
No matter what blacks say they will vote for Booker. Race is the most definitive factor in voting, followed by party.
Scratch a NJ Democrat, and you will find one who thinks failure is the result of too-few liberal programs.
“No matter what blacks say they will vote for Booker. Race is the most definitive factor in voting, followed by party.”
I agree, but NJ doesn’t have nearly enough (about 13%). Like Obama, he needs a large number of whites and Hispanics with their palms outstretched to taxpayers to carry the state.
