One in three Germans want a second election, a survey released on Thursday showed—just hours before talks were set to start between Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU/CSU) and the Green Party to explore a potential coalition partnership.

Merkel’s CDU/CSU, despite securing its most convincing win since German reunification, was caught out by the dramatic events of election night. Not only did her party just fall short of an absolute majority needed to rule alone, but the chancellor’s previous coalition partners, the Free Democrats (FDP) were booted out of parliament. …

In the 30-44 age bracket, 40 percent would support fresh elections, as opposed to just 26 percent of over-60s. …

I realize that European coalition governments operate differently than we do, but still ...

Merkel almost got a majority of votes -- and a third of the voters now seek a do-over?

Hey, I bet over a third of all Republicans wanted a do-over in 1992.
I bet over a third of all Republicans wanted a do-over in 1996.
I KNOW over a third of all Democrats wanted a do-over in 2000.
I KNOW over a third of all Democrats wanted a do-over in 2004.
I KNOW over a third of all Republicans wanted a do-over in 2008.
I KNOW over a third of all Republicans wanted a do-over in 2012.

So what??

I never understand the coverage of that election outcome. Yeah Merkel’s party won a large plurality, but her main coalition partner was booted from government entirely. The election results suggested she stole most of her increased margin from her own coalition partner, who were unable to gain the %5 of the vote necessary to participate in government. It seemed like a big mess to me, and it’s proving to be just that.

This is one of those situations when parliamentary democracies turn into a huge mess. (We’re messed-up too, but for different reasons).
