The officer would have been justified in shooting him the first time he started walking toward him...glad the trooper is ok, bad guy, well, adult decisions have adult consequences. Too bad he decided to die in front of his kids like that.

It could be adrenaline, he doesn’t feel it until he gets in the car, but it looks like he got hit after he got off the first few shots - He twists to the right as if hit. The cop must have been standing out with his gun ready. Either that or the guy shot himself in the chest when he got back in the car.
