Meet One of the First Obamacare Enrollees
Wall Street Journal ^ | October 3, 2013 | By Christopher Weaver

Leslie Foster, a 28-year-old freelance filmmaker in Hollywood, Calif., is among the first wave of enrollees in new insurance plans under the federal health law.

Because he earns only about $20,000 a year doing freelance videography and odd jobs, Mr. Foster qualifies for federal subsidies that cut deep into the premiums for health plans available in the new marketplaces, which opened Tuesday morning.

The total monthly premium is $213.68 according to an online confirmation page Mr. Foster retained for his records. But the subsidies will cover more than $150 of those costs.

Mr. Foster's enrollment won't formally be complete until the health plan contacts him with billing information, according to the receipt. He will have to pay his first month's premium in December, he said.

The Obamacare subsidies are a CLEAR violation of the equal protection clause of the 14th amendment.

My old canadian BC provincial health premiums per month were waaaay cheaper than $200, even at 2013 rates. If this idiot is forking over 200 bux, how does he still have the money for rent etc at 20K a year? Just pay the penalty, you obama tool.

That looks like some pretty expensive camera/video equipment he’s holding considering he’s a freelance filmmaker earning $20k a year!

He only has to pay $60 after the subsidy. Of course his deductible is going to be $5k on the bronze plan and $2500 for silver. Assuming he is in good health he will be paying negotiated rates completely out of pocket for the couple times a year he goes to the doctor.

My premium here in the Czech Republic is only the equivalent of $50 USD a month. No deductibles, super-cheap copays.

For the curious, we have a mix of private and public here; almost all doctors will do fee-for-service as well as take insurance, and there’s about five insurance companies here.

One interesting thing; for those Czechs on public assistance (welfare or the dole if you like), the health insurance premium is deducted from their monthly benefit.

Eben until this year, it’s ALL gubmint’ under BC law, as the gubmint’ frowns on using private services. There’s even instances when the private clinics request the medical records from the govt’ hospital, and they supposedly withold the records.

The good part is that say, you ‘cannot “ afford the monthly or jobless, you simply write a letter requesting free medical in BC. Sometimes, they request bank statements but rarely do. With so many jobless in the US, they could barely even pay the penalty.

Pretty much shows you that the people signing up think they're getting something when they're not.

The Obunga gang counts on the mooches who thinks they're getting something for next to nothing.

How do you even afford to breathe in California for 20k/year much less pay for anything else?

No surprises.

Even in the People’s Republic of Santa Cruz, the local commentariat admits that CommieCare will be great for people at the bottom, irrelevant to people at the top, and screw the people in the middle royally.

That’s what they want, and that’s what it is: a redistribution of earned income from the productive to the non-productive.

Wanna be a slouch yer whole life? Don’t worry, the saps get to pay for it.

Kinda like being an underpaid Community Organizer as a “career”.

Wait a minute........I thought that all of these younger liberals were just waiting to help pay the costs of insurance for the rest of us? Now, his contribution is sixty dollars a month? I bet he pays more than that for his cellphone bill.

The whole idea behind Obamacare was to get EVERYONE on some sort of welfare so they become lifetime democrat voters.

Some of the liberal blogs are showcasing a “republican” who is now the recipient of Obamacare and “affordable” premiums. For his picture, they’re showing his public facebook profile picture, which was taken last month in Hawaii. I don’t know whether to shake my head or cry.

Thanks to this President it won't be long before we're all poor enough to afford health insurance.

“If this idiot is forking over 200 bux, how does he still have the money for rent etc at 20K a year?”

Living very frugally or getting paid under the table. My bet is mostly on the latter.

They conveniently left out how much his deductible is.

According to the article, he's getting a subsidy of around $150/month. His out-of-pocket is $62/mo.

What is his deductible? How much does he have to pay out of pocket? Did I miss this in the article?
