Greek PM vows to eradicate far-right Golden Dawn

Greece's prime minister said Monday his government will do "whatever it takes" to completely eradicate the extreme-right Golden Dawn party, whose neo-Nazi leaders have just been arrested.

Antonis Samaras said the Greek people "are very smart" and are now seeing the party for what it really is.

"I believe that they will realize that they should not follow the party that has such extreme ideological positions and ideas," he told a meeting in New York of AJC, the American Jewish Committee, which advocates globally on Jewish issues.

Samaras, in New York to attend the U.N. annual meeting of world leaders, added that he does not believe the party will return with greater popularity because its leaders will be viewed as victims or martyrs. Golden Dawn's approach and thinking about politics is "so negative" and "so hideous ... (and) so catastrophic to Greeks and Greece that I do not believe they might come back," he said.

"What to me is important is to deracinate totally this group"

Deracinate? WTH? Wonder if they would 'deracinate' Tea Party members?

Golden Dawn issues anti-Semitic diatribe against AJC’s Harris on Greece visit

“They are none other than those who possess most of the international wealth. The people behind the international loan-sharks,” the statement said. “Everyone knows they belong to a certain race, which presents itself as a victim, while in reality it is the perpetrator. Everyone knows that they are none other than those pulling the strings behind the marionettes. They are the absolute evil for mankind.”

The second statement ended with a threat.

“The time will come when the nationalists of the Golden Dawn will take revenge like the horsemen of the storm, and all of them, being the absolute evil, will pay!”

Greeks find cause of all their woes: the Jews

Its high-flying leader Nikolaos Michaloliakos declares: “There were no ovens. This is a lie. I believe that it is a lie….There were no gas chambers either.”

Getting back to their historic roots. That's how the ancient Greeks dealt with political opponents--the group in power would kill or exile as many as possible of their enemies. See Thucydides on the stasis in Corcyra or Xenophon on the Thirty Tyrants at Athens in 404 B.C. (they killed 1500 Athenians and drove thousands more into exile, under the leadership of Socrates' protege Critias).

Killing on that scale might create a backlash (with memories of the Greek civil war and of the dictatorship of the late 1960s) so maybe they will just exile the leaders of Golden Dawn.

So, if I’m getting this straight, they’re calling the NAZI wannabes the “far right”. Really? The imitators of the National Socialist Party?

That’s rich in itself. Maybe they have their right and left mixed up in Greece...

They don’t have the spiffy Hugo Boss uniforms and the jaunty marching music, like the Königgrätzer March.

So, not quite everything.

"We are dedicated (to) completely eradicating such a shame," he said. "There is no room for the neo-Nazis in any part of the democratic world, and there is no tolerance for the neo-Nazis, or for any kind of extremism, undermining democratic institutions."

On Saturday, police counterterrorism units started arresting key Golden Dawn leaders and by Monday, six lawmakers — including the party's top two officials — 14 other members and two police officers with alleged sympathies had been arrested. Warrants have been issued for 10 more people.

Apparently there is no room for extremism unless it is Leftist extremism.

Arresting members of parliament should never take place unless there is direct and incontrovertible proof that they were directly involved in plotting this stabbing.

I find it unbelievable that the government could have put together proof that 20 people were involved in this crime. In fact I don’t believe any of them were knowledgeable before the fact. It would simply be stupid for a MP to support the killing of a rapper. What would it profit the MP or his party?

Also other than nationalism Nazis have nothing in common with conservatives.

This act on the part of ruling party is anti-democratic and should be protested by the public. If the MP has been lawfully elected he should stay in office unless truly convicted of a crime of lawfully removed by a special election (if they have such a process).

This whole thing seems like the ruling party taking advantage of a crime to make a political purge of political enemies

If they stopped importing cheap Muslim illegals, the Golden Dawn would dissolve on its own. A lot of Greeks supported them because they were the only major party not trying to dissolve Greek identity.

No one wants to support a Nazi. Only desperate folks turn to them as an ally.

I dream of the day when FReepers learn that the Euro right is to the left of Obama and always has been. The English speaking right is a who different animal and always has been in Britain, Canada, Australia, and the USA.

I’m a bit worried that this might backfire. It could make them into martyrs, spurring even greater support. Add in the fact that the Greek police seem to be strong supporters of the Dawn, and well, this could end badly. They say that the Dawn’s leader has been imprisoned. Let us hope he doesn’t decide to write a book while behind bars.

That said, I’m also wondering what charges were being brought. The Dawn are scum - calling them Nazis is justified - this isn’t standard European political name calling, where anyone to the right of Trotsky is called a fascist. Are they being arrested on conspiracy charges, due to that musician that was stabbed to death by a Dawn member last week?

The best way to deal with these types is to prevent them from growing in the first place.

Interestingly enough the last time the Klan had any real power in the USA was when ultra progressive Woodrow Wilson was president and the Klan was acting as his version of OFA

Why are National SOCIALISTS considered right wing?

It is liberal speak. They are left wingers. It is just their way of trying to get away with calling us Nazis. Don't let them get away with it. When they call me a Nazi, I just call them a communist, and the conversation is generally over by then.
