ABOARD A U.S. MILITARY AIRCRAFT — Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel criticized Congress on Saturday as “astoundingly irresponsible” and said that using threats to shut down the government to satisfy a political whim is dangerously shortsighted.

Hagel, who oversees as much as half of the government civilians who would be furloughed next week if Congress doesn’t reach a budget agreement, told reporters that the impasse threatens to delay paychecks to troops serving in Afghanistan.

“When you look at the greatest democracy in the world, the largest economy in the world and we’re putting our people through this — that’s not leadership. That’s abdication of responsibilities,” Hagel told reporters on his plane en route to South Korea. “This is an astoundingly irresponsible way to govern.”

Hagel added: “It is really dangerously shortsighted and irresponsible, because what this will lead to in the United States of America, if this continues, is we will have a country that’s ungovernable.”

Roughly 400,000 Defense Department civilians could face furloughs if Congress fails to agree on a short-term spending plan to keep the government running. And while military troops would continue to work, and eventually be paid, a shutdown would delay their pay until funding was restored.

The House needs to dust off one of their budgets (, let Cruz modify it,) and send it over to Dingy again.

With a nominal $17 trillion dollar national debt its pretty safe to say that the country is already ungovernable. The debt is totally out of control, even without all the unfunded liabilities. The country is an absolute mess.

Besides, Hagel’s argument is moot. Obama already rules by executive order and agency regulations that circumvent governance. The congress is essentially a potted plant.

"because what this will lead to in the United States of America, if this continues, is we will have a country that’s ungovernable.”

If by ungovernable, he means that the governing class has limited powers and that the people are in charge of their elected representatives, then yes! That's how it's supposed to work.

We the people apply the pressure and them the governing must bend to our will. It's not supposed to be the other way around Chuck!

"Stand up for Chuck"!

“’ungovernable country’”

Does he mean that Obemba would become useless or even more useless than he is now?

How cool would that be? ;-)

You damn right Hagel..we will be ungovernable by the likes of YOU and your dumble friends.

Pelousy, Reaper Reid, Zero and the rest of the hee haw gang can go jump.

The takers will NOT rule the producers.

I really like how they whine about the 30 million who will “lose” their healthcare while ignoring that 280 million will have theirs ruined.

Absolutely and positively scru u, Hagel and your ilk.

“When you look at the greatest democracy in the world, ...

Chuck in case you don't know America is a Republic.

Hagel added: “It is really dangerously shortsighted and irresponsible, because what this will lead to in the United States of America, if this continues, is we will have a country that’s ungovernable.”

Again Chuckie you should learn your history, America was never supposed to be governed by the Feds. I urge you to look up the Tenth Amendment. Like any highly centralized political system it has never been able and can not govern effectively for more than short periods of time. The founders knew this and at one time most of Americans knew this.

We have become so dumbed down there is almost no hope.

“Ungovernable”? The hell you say up chuckie.

I dream that the end of the time when pukes like chuckie and obastard could pull the strings of the people and work their personal agendas of dictatorship behind closed doors would end.

I dream of a day when the fools like chuckie, obastard, reed, blinky, mclame, grammnesty, mitch the bitch and all of their kind are carried out of town tarred, feathered, tied to a rail and cast into the Potomac for bull shark bait.

Whats the difference between having Hagel, Obama, Pelousy and the others in office and the country being ungovernable. On second thought I’ll take ungovernable.

What is the Defense Department chief commenting on this for?

Ungovernable? As in so chaotic that the Chief of the Defense Department who oversees the military as a social experiment, is commenting on economic policy, belonging to the Congress? Which pays his salary?

And whom he serves at their pleasure?

This is so bad right now. the only -the only - consolation we have for this madness is that a few guys in th senate with detectable virility see this too.
