House Republican leaders are stuck with a tough choice after Senate Democrats succeeded in passing a "clean" budget bill which, contrary to GOP wishes, includes full funding for ObamaCare.
The Senate, capping a dramatic week on Capitol Hill, approved the bill on Friday, after Democrats stripped a Republican-backed provision to defund the health law. The final vote was 54-44.
The bill now returns to the House, and is seen by some lawmakers as a sort of legislative hot potato. If the two chambers cannot agree on a final bill by midnight on Monday, then the government will shut down. Neither side wants to be left holding the bill if that happens.
House Speaker John Boehner could, theoretically, just call up the Senate-passed bill and rely on mostly Democrats to pass it. But House Republicans are under heavy pressure, now, from fellow conservatives to stand by their demand that ObamaCare be defunded, or least delayed.
"I don't know of anyone who wants to shut down the government. The only thing we want to shut down is ObamaCare," Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., said.
Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, who staged an unsuccessful effort to stall the bill in the Senate, predicted the House would restore anti-ObamaCare provisions -- and urged Senate Republicans to unite with them. "Today, far too many Republicans joined Harry Reid in giving the Democrats the ability to fund ObamaCare," he said.
Boehner signaled he will not accept the Senate-passed bill in its current form.
"The House will take action that reflects the fundamental fact that Americans don't want a government shutdown and they don't want the train wreck that is ObamaCare," spokesman Brendan Buck said in a statement.

McConRat is up for re-election. He saw his Rat shadow and won’t be out of the turd-le shell till primary season is over.
I watched the link from seven days ago. You’re right. Senator Cruz mentions smaller bills at that point. Look. I’m not going to debate you over who wanted to do what first, and I’m not going to demean your intelligence like some sort of smarmy, condescending jerk. When I said Senator Cruz could have had his 20+ hour speech with or without a cloture vote, I think that’s pretty much self evident. Yeah, he needed a bill from the House. I never said he didn’t. I said he didn’t need the vote against cloture. Cloture or no cloture, we aren’t any closer to funding government, and he still got his speech. That was my point.
-— Why not just a quick vote rejecting this bill and send it back without Obamacare once again, say late Monday night.
Stick it back to Reid. -—
Absolutely.
The purpose of the filibuster was to slow down the Senate to back them into a corner. It worked perfectly. Notice that they had the votes to keep cloture going in the second vote. They hid behind Dingy’s SKIRT in the first vote. The GOPe took a fatal blow today. The traitors have been outed. Bombs away!
Sen. Marco Rubio, I want the government shut down!!!
Maybe, but all I saw was you questioning everything about him, including repeatedly making claims he didn't have an end-game plan, which clearly he does, and a good one at that. So now you're down to just nit-picking, which you still seem more interested in than admitting MY point, which is that we're much better off than if we had just funded Obamacare 100% last week, which in reality appeared to be your original point.
As it stands tonight, the House could just send the two bills as-is to conference, and defund Obamacare 50%, yet you're still clinging to some supposed criticism of Cruz, when the only thing he's really guilty of, is upsetting the Washington establishment.
I have no problem with Senator Cruz. I’m opposed to the all or nothing crowd who are ready to demonize every Republican who didn’t do what Cruz wanted. 44 Republican senators voted to defund Obamacare. That’s not to say I don’t think some of the Republican senators, like McCain, are reprehensible. He couldn’t wait to bash Senator Cruz on the Senate floor. It is one thing for us to discuss the pros and cons of particular actions here on Free Republic. It’s something entirely different to stand up in the Senate and tear down your own team. Well, McCain isn’t actually tearing down his team—Democrats—but you get the point.
I support the effort made by Senator Cruz, but we are forgetting to consider the elephant in the middle of the room (or on the floor).
Our entire country is bankrupt.
Arguing over ObamaCare, the debt ceiling, the funding of all entitlements, etc. is just like squabbling over nonexistent life-boats.
Anyone who has been paying attention to Bernanke’s efforts to bail out the sinking Titanic will understand my take on this. Our fiat currency system is over, and we are going down.
There is no way out of this, and I how I wish there were. Send in the clowns, wait, they are here - and in Congress.
Get ready for a fall-back to the later 1700s, for it is coming, and most of us will not survive. We do not have the skills required.
Glad to hear you’re coming around. You sounded a lot like McCain/Corker etc earlier in this thread though (go see for yourself), and those arguments just don’t add up. They’re Washington/Wall Street insiders, like much of Congress, and we need more outsiders like Cruz taking them to task. And with a name like CitizenUSA, it was surprising to see on you the wrong side of the debate. Goodnight.
LOL
Bohners definitely the weak link in the plan.
Boehner's son-in-law. BTW, you think if Chelsea Clinton or Zero's daughters got engaged to a dude like this, that the fella would've suddenly disappeared ?
They should rip up the Senate bill and send the original House bill right back to them.
That’s what they should do.
What they will do is give the Dems everything they want. :(
right. once again, God’s speed to you on your surgery.
i’m praying for the speaker. that our Lord decides the time is finally right to remove the scales from the speaker’s eyes.
Prayers to you Jim, God Bless
Ever since Republicans took back the House Ive been saying defund the White House and Congress support departments. Dont touch the Secrete Service or Capital Police but eliminate everything else. No cleaning staff, no office staff, no chefs at WH, no secretaries for Senators, etc.
Let Obama eat Michelles cooking, answer his own phone, type his own letters. Let Micelle clean house and make the beds, take out the garbage.
Let Senators pack lunch instead of eating in the Senate diningroom, type their own letters, take out the trash, dust and vacuum their own offices, etc.
Restore the funding in a bill that repeals Obamacare. The public would love it. Welfare checks would go out, the national parks would be open. Only the ruling political class would feel the pain.
Only a President?
Quite a few would consider that an insulting demotion from the godlike (or, at the very least, imperial) attitudes I've seen trotted out when they think nobody's watching.
...and there's a whole bunch of the characters in the House aren't far behind that on the Self-Esteem Scale.
Exactly what kind of conversation do you think that you could EVER have with Pelosi, for example?
They have no clue how real this is. My 86 year old mother in law was dropped from her Medicare supplemental plan. Just got the letter yesterday. Do they think this is some game?
And if they do it one at a time the media would have to report it. When they’re sending volleys back and forth between House and Senate one at a time, there’s no other legislative news to report during the wait, as long as these clowns don’t do the back-stabbing jealousy routine to distract from what’s really happening. As Cruz has said, this is not about them. Those who want to make this about this or that personality in Congress are distracting and doing everybody a disservice.
