WASHINGTON — The Senate on Friday overwhelmingly approved stopgap spending legislation to keep the federal government open without gutting President Obama’s health care law, setting up a weekend showdown with the House that will decide whether much of the government shuts down at midnight Monday.
The 54-to-44 vote for final passage followed a more critical moment when the Senate, in a bipartisan rebuke to Republican hard-liners, cut off debate on the legislation. The 79-to-19 vote included the top Republican leadership and easily exceeded the 60-vote threshold to break a filibuster.
The Senate then voted along party lines, 54 to 44, to strip out House Republican language that tied further funding of the government to defunding the health care law. That vote required only a simple 51-vote majority.

Oops, correction, Johnson was there. I meant to say Jeff Flake.
He supposedly was going to vote No on Cloture, not because of Obamacare but because he thought spending was still too high. Doesn’t look like he took part in either vote.
Cruz picked up 19 GOP Senators for that key vote
And he lost 38 GOP Senators.That is exactly 2 to 1.
I think he originally had 13 pledge signatures to defund, but I see it grew to 16 pledges to oppose cloture, then he got 3 more to give him 19.
Expect the House GOP to come up with their own second approach now, will see if Bohner can get the votes to pass one.

I was thinking the same at the gym, he got 19/47.
Hmm Jeff Flake (who said he’d have voted no) was absent, had more important things to do, his son’s wedding. Okay that’s a big deal and his vote wouldn’t have made a difference.
But he once missed a key (and close) vote in the house years ago when his daughter was competing in a beauty pageant.
Guys, this Senate vote was designed to fail from the start,
No one I has seen here expected Cruz to win over the Senate on this.
Now we are expected to count on Bohner to be the hero and to hold the line and be the main hero on making sure there is a shutdown to force Reid and Obama to defund O-care.
If their idea fails then the Debt limit is much lower hanging fruit to us to beat Dems on. Much better chance to get something to Obama to surrender on. .
There are showing real weaknesses for Dems on that.
What was Hatch’s excuse for missing the vote?

As SOL says this effort was doomed, but I’d have liked as many nays as possible. I understand though, weddings are scheduled way in advance. I presume Flake would have been there was a chance at success. Still, this isn’t a good time to be away from your post. I don’t know.
I agree, it was DOA in the Senate, but if all these Republicans who “pledged” they would fight to repeal Obamacare were serious, the cloture vote would have prevailed by a vote of 55 YEA - 43 NAY (that’s along party lines with Flake and Hatch absent, the two Indy’s voting with the RATs, and ardent socialists who claim to be Republicans like Kirk and Murkowski having an epiphany and voting with us).
Of course, the reality is we couldn’t even muster 20 votes against ending debate (let alone 43), because most of the Republicans in the Senate are spineless, including many of the “conservatives” (Coburn, Burr, etc.)

The demonstration of effort to defund Obamacare has been made. The chances of it being successful were minuscule to none.
No one has had the courage, Cruz or anyone else to attack the President personally and loudly proclaim him incompetent. The thing starts Tuesday and the government is incapable of implementation. That is Obama’s government, that is Obama that has failed.
Did he fail because he is black? No he failed because he is totally lacking in the leadership skills and abilities necessary for running the government. His blackness is secondary to his general failure as a man.
He does have the power and wields it brutally. Until he is gone, there will be Obamacare.

The House is debating the one year O-care delay CR right now on CSPAN. Reid sent his Senate home, gave them the weekend off.
