I will never forget an encounter I had on a business trip to La Jolla about 15 years ago.
Checked into a hotel there late one night and had a conversation with the desk clerk since we discovered we were both from NYC.
Turns out, he was a Puerto Rican guy from The Bronx. He was arrested and charged with a felony, and the judge said to him: “Five years or sign up with the Marines.” He chose Parris Island.

It used to be common for men to go into military service to avoid a conviction and possible jail time. I don’t think they even allow that anymore. Last I heard, with the volunteer system they won’t even accept recruits with a criminal record these days. But I defer to other FReepers here who would know far more about that then I would.
See, it’s so rare, they decided to make a TV series about it.
