Russia to charge Greenpeace activists with piracy (5 to 15 years in penal colony)

Greenpeace activists arrested after trying to board a Russian oil rig are likely to face piracy charges, local media reports.

Two New Zealanders are among the crew of the protest vessel Arctic Sunrise who were confronted and detained by armed members of the Russian coastguard on Thursday.

Authorities said the rig was in an exclusion zone, but Greenpeace argues its boat was in international waters.

All the activists will be prosecuted for the "attack" on the oil rig, an investigative committee told Russian media.

In a statement the committee said it had opened a criminal case on suspicion of piracy.

Greenpeace has had no contact with the Arctic Sunrise, which is being towed towards the port of Mumansk.

I’m going to guess the Russians will confiscate the boat, impose fines which will put a dent in Greenpeace’s budget, but ultimately release the people.

These annoying liberal hippies use the luxuries modernity has brought but seek to destroy the means by which the are produced. I rejoice at their failure. But I would mention Russia is using the same over-prosecution technique Florida used on George Zimmerman. Governments use this heavy handed trick to force others to their will. The idea in Zimmerman’s case was to get him to plea to a lesser charge. But his case caught fire and people contributed to his defense. Otherwise he’d be rotting in jail, which in his case is most likely a death sentence.

In this instance the Russian plea deal will probably be that Greenpeace go annoy somebody else, preferably American oil companies. If the Russians really suspected piracy they’d have shot them all on the spot. (Here’s a video of how Russians treat pirates. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOjdBp167q0 )

Personally, I would scrap or sink the boat and put the “pirates” in jail to make every “Greenpeacer” in the world aware of what the consequences are for piracy. They are nothing more than “Legallized Terrorists”

Something else Putin’s Globalist Communist haters will whine about

Most countries would do the same thing if you illegally boarded their ships. These GreenPiece folks should be happy they were not executed at sea

The weakness of the comparison is that Zimmerman was, by all accounts, innocent from the get go.

It appears these feral beings are guilty from the get go.

The technique is the same whether you’re innocent or not. The state has its agenda and will use all of the considerable tools at its disposal to slap you under their will. But, yes, these guys should be prosecuted as terrorists. Better, arm the rigs and post signs saying that unauthorized boarders will be shot. Greenpeace would only do this once.

BTW, this prosecution will fail in at least one way. Greenpeace will use it to collect millions in donations. That is their real agenda anyway. The Green Warriors are expendable to that end.

Some years ago (before 9/11) some Greenpeace wackos came barrelling into the piers at Norfolk Naval Station and threw paint on one of the Navy’s submarines. They were repelled using blasts from the ship’s firemain.

Later Greenpeace tried to sue the Navy for blasting them with high pressure water.

There wer an awful lot of people who figured the "Pussy Riot" thugs would be convicted and sentenced to some sort of parole, too. Russia is going back to being seriously Russian so I'm not so sure these pirates will just get a slap on the wrist and be allowed to hit the speaking circuit to raise funds to replace what may be seized.
