A Mayoral Hopeful Now, de Blasio Was Once a Young Leftist
New York Times ^ | September 22, 2013 | JAVIER C. HERNÁNDEZ

The scruffy young man who arrived in Nicaragua in 1988 stood out.

He was tall and sometimes goofy, known for his ability to mimic a goose’s honk. He spoke in long, meandering paragraphs, musing on Franklin D. Roosevelt, Karl Marx and Bob Marley. He took painstaking notes on encounters with farmers, doctors and revolutionary fighters.

Bill de Blasio, then 26, went to Nicaragua to help distribute food and medicine in the middle of a war between left and right. But he returned with something else entirely: a vision of the possibilities of an unfettered leftist government.

As he seeks to become the next mayor of New York City, Mr. de Blasio, the city’s public advocate, has spoken only occasionally about his time as a fresh-faced idealist who opposed foreign wars, missile defense systems and apartheid in the late 1980s and early 1990s. References to his early activism have been omitted from his campaign Web site.

But a review of hundreds of pages of records and more than two dozen interviews suggest his time as a young activist was more influential in shaping his ideology than previously known, and far more political than typical humanitarian work.

I hope Lhota wins, although I would not count on it. A country that elects and re-elects Obama is a country whose largest city can elect de Blasio. Sometimes I feel like giving up.

Only liars or fools characterize communists as “idealists”. Lenin would’ve laughed at that.

He wants even more control over what you do, and wants to take even more of your property.

First, his real name is not deBlasio, he changed it to his mother’s maiden name. Second, the reason why Guiliani and Bloomberg (a liberal, but no Marxist and he had some common sense, at least on business and crime issues) were able to win is because of huge margins on Staten Island which offset the blowouts their opponents would get in the Bronx and Manhattan. I don’t think Lhota can repeat this; people have short memories of the pre-Rudy days and I would imagine the best that L can get is a 55-45 split against Mr. What’s His Name. Let the Demos have the city - they will find out quick that the Wall Street financial district, which accounts for about half of tax revenues, can easily locate the bulk of its operations to a lower tax elsewhere.

Increasingly, he was distressed by what he saw as “timidity” in the Democratic Party, as it moved to the political center in the dawning of the Clinton era, and he thought the government should be doing more to help low-income workers and maintain higher tax rates.

In 1991, at one of his final meetings with the Nicaragua Solidarity Network, he argued that the liberal values the group had defended were “far from dead” around the world, with blossoming movements in places like Mexico, the Philippines, El Salvador and Brazil, according to minutes of the meeting. He spoke of a need to understand and build alliances with Islam, predicting it would soon be a dominant force in politics.

Astounding that such a piece of communistic dung could get a nomination for dog catcher from a major political party, let alone mayor of the largest city.

Just in case there was any doubt that the Democratic Party exists in opposition to, and works for the destruction of, the United States Of America.

Wow. This kind of thinking must have been what caused Clinton to take the side of the Muslims against the Serbs.

“In a recent interview, Mr. de Blasio said his views then — and now — represented a mix of admiration for European social democratic movements, Mr. Roosevelt’s New Deal and liberation theology.”

In bed with Rev. Wright and Barry...

Was this classified as “Breaking News”?

NYC can look forward to giving back it’s 20 years of gains during this next Mayoral term. It doesn’t take long for leftists to leave their impact.

Nothing unusual there. He's currently an old leftist, so it stands to reason he was once a young leftist.

I think it's called "Jane Fonda Disorder".

Glenn Beck Devotes Epic Segment to ‘Marxist Communist’ Bill de Blasio

By Colin Campbell 10/02/2013

A scene from Glenn Beck’s program.
“Get out of New York,” Glenn Beck warned his audience yesterday. “Why? Because of who the next mayor is going to be.”

Mr. Beck, on TheBlaze TV, made clear he is very concerned about Bill de Blasio, the Democratic front-runner in this year’s mayoral race.

Mr. Beck held little back in the segment. He raged against Mr. de Blasio’s past support for the leftist Sandinista regime in Nicaragua and suggested an Anthony Weiner-related conspiracy designed to distract the public from Mr. de Blasio, whom he labeled a “Marxist communist with a history of supporting terrorism”–with dramatic music playing all the while.

“He believes this country as it was founded is rotten to its core, saying, quote, ‘The government should be doing a lot more to helping low income workers and maintain higher tax rates.’ Unquote. This is not coming from me or The Blaze. This is coming from The New York Times,” Mr. Beck said during the show, which was flagged by Gothamist this morning.

Mr. de Blasio’s campaign did not immediately return a request for comment on the inflammatory accusations.
