Russia's Putin shines at Valdai summit as he castigates West
BBC ^

And in an opening speech devoted to Russian values, he castigated the West for losing touch with its Christian roots when it came to gender questions.

Mr Putin said that "one-gender families" and exaggerated political correctness were leading countries into degradation and a deepening moral crisis.

One Austrian professor challenged him on this and asked for a guarantee that minority values would be respected in Russia and not subject to harassment.

Mr Putin denied there were any laws in Russia to punish sexual minorities for their orientation. The Russian law which had caused so much controversy was, he said, simply to stop "propaganda" among minors.

But the Russian leader did not try to hide his disdain for sexual minorities. Europeans, he continued, were suffering from a falling birth rate and could be in danger of dying out if they did not do something about it.

"You can either have more children to increase your population," said Mr Putin in typical blunt fashion, "or have more migrants, but you don't like them either. It's your choice."

He even returned to the subject to make a joke of what he perceived as Western Europe's distorted attitude to gender issues. Recalling his friendship with former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, he noted that Mr Berlusconi was now on trial for living with women.

"But if he'd been living with men, as a homosexual, no-one would have dared lay a finger on him," Mr Putin said.

The Russians in the auditorium erupted into roars of laughter. On the panel next to a grinning Mr Putin, his European guests looked bemused and uncomfortable.

Putin lecturing us on moral values. This is directly attributable to this metrosexual we have in the WH parading as a leader.

In time we will have a real man as president—he will have a name like Cruz or Lee or Palin.

No kidding. When Vladimir Putin channels Ronald Reagan, you know America has gone off the rails.

I’m not so sure that’s the real Putin or just some act he puts on to solidify his power. The church is a powerful ally of his.

The sad thing is that he makes 100 times more sense than the current White House occupant. Historically speaking, it has been the cultures with strong self-identity and some kind of moral base that have had staying power, not the limp-wristed ones that, in their self-absorption, collapse inward upon themselves.

Not that I trust Putin, mind you. The man is a politician and a former KGB head to boot, so you never know where he's coming from. One thing for sure, he and Assad made Obama and his Administration look like weak, feckless amateurish fools in front of the whole world and he knows all the good ways of using public opinion and propaganda to rub it in and turn it to his advantage. And I think that new Ayatollah in Iran (another of Russia's clients) is now picking up on it and doing the same thing. It's like Obama is walking around with a "Kick Me" sign on his behind.

Putin certainly is playing the game sooo much better than our Dear Leader. No chance now Iran will not build nuclear weapons. It is clear now all Barry will do is talk loud and put down the stick.

Still, Putin has a big problem and he knows it. Since Peter the Great Russia's great power status has depended on a population so big it could field armies that could overwhelm the armies from smaller European countries. But Russia's population is imploding from poor health (alcholism and HIV) and a very high abortion rate. If this keeps up, Russia could lose great power status no matter how well its leader plays the game.

Wow.

Any chance that he REALLY means what he says, or is this rhetorical flourish only?

He may be just twisting the knife in deeper, since he obviously kicked Obama’s ass on the world stage....

If true it would appear that Putin, recognizing that (before recently) the US had the more successful model, has rushed into the void created by our marxist guest lecturer community activist president dragging the US towards the old embarrassingly unsuccessful USSR model.
