(Reuters) - The Republican-run House of Representatives voted to cut spending on food stamps for the poor by $40 billion on Thursday, defying a veto threat from the White House in the name of fiscal reform.

Majority Leader Eric Cantor, the driving force behind the legislation, said "it's wrong for working, middle-class people to pay" for abuse of the program, whose costs have skyrocketed in recent years. Democrats pointed to nonpartisan estimates that the bill would end benefits to 4 million needy people in 2014.

Misleading title. Corrected title: “House approves $40 billion cut in food stamps for able-bodied adults who can work but choose not to”

NO ONE will have to be cut off if they would reinstitute limits on what can be purchased.

I’d rather see a headline about the house cutting funding to the EPA to ease job creation.

"Passing the House" and "becoming law" are two very different things with the current makeup of Congress and Caliph Baraq.

Awesome! Some of “the poor” may now have to forego their Ubamaphones and flat-screen TVs to buy their beer and lobster and lottery tickets.
Boo-freaking-hoo.

Did they cut food stamps? No, not really. They changed the rules, putting back in place work requirements, and permitted states to drop drug users.

But that’s not the liberal slant, so instead, it is cutting 40 billion from the poor so they can feed their rich friends more tax cuts...

Just boggles the mind how easily 40 billion is tossed around as a number though. Isn’t that the GDP of a third world country?

If the House REALLY wanted to cut food stamps, they could go back to food distributions of commodities.. Sacks of flour, sugar, lard, beans, cured ham... And if someone complained that their diet doesn’t permit such things, a handout of where to find another food distribution that might offer something more appealing.

Yup! No agenda here! Rooters wouldn’t let some old liberal bias or DNC talking points memo get in the way of hard news, now would they?

Weed out the fraud and put in a better vetting verification system and you will recover that and more.

Good start. Should be twice as much cut. Some of the misuse of this is hard to believe. Saw a lady the other day at the market make proper purchases and then went to the lotto machine and bought a bunch of tickets with CASH. She should have used the cash for the food.

Food stamps have always been supported by the agriculture lobby. But in the Era of Baraq, they’ve become such a large percentage of retail food sales that all the stores are in the lobbying force also.

I guess the rich will still get their food stamps uninterrupted.

I’m with you. This was a bad idea. This further cements the view of many people that the GOP is uncaring. I’m all for cuts, but food stamps?

> How will some of them be able to buy booze now?

Like they already do. They find someone who needs some “discount groceries” for 1/2 price then buy food with the EBT cards and get paid cash by that someone. Its a good deal for both of them but a horrible deal for the tapayers who have to pay for it.
