Obama Feels a Pinch From Congressional Democrats

The Democratic uproar that sank Lawrence Summers’s chances of taking charge of the Federal Reserve suggests that President Barack Obama’s clout on Capitol Hill is eroding ahead of crucial decisions about government spending and the debt ceiling.

Mr. Obama often singles out House Republicans for blocking his agenda in Congress. But as his second term plays out, he also is confronting restive factions within his own party that are uneasy with some of his policies. The liberal wing in particular has rallied against his proposed use of force in Syria, his openness to changing entitlement programs and his apparent interest in awarding the Fed chairmanship to Mr. Summers, who some associate with financial deregulation of the Clinton years.

Mr. Obama’s fellow Democrats are restricting his maneuvering room, giving him a taste of the frustrations that congressional Republican leaders are enduring at the hands of the tea party.

The rising danger for Mr. Obama, say some political observers, is that he is less able to keep his party together at a moment when lawmakers have only weeks to meet several deadlines.

Congress must pass a plan to fund the government by the time the new fiscal year starts on Oct. 1, and the Treasury projects that the nation’s borrowing limit will need to be raised by mid-October.

“Members of his own party in the Congress seem to be going their own way,” said Sean Wilentz, a history professor at Princeton University.

Long-running tensions between tea party and establishment Republicans have obscured “what may be” emerging strains within the Democratic Party that are causing “a political headache” for the president, Mr. Wilentz said.

Some of Mr. Obama’s troubles are of his own making...

Be nice if that “pinch” turned into a crush like a size 14 boot coming down on a cockroach.

At this point, with the elections not all that far away, the strongest instinct in an animal - that of self-preservation, and it’s political animal analog, getting re-elected, may be kicking in...

It makes me wonder if there is secret polling that has horrible news for the rat party. Of course, it would not be the first time that polling negative to them would be hidden.

Recall that Mr Summers lost the confidence of his Harvard professors when he opined that women lacked the necessary higher critical thinking skills required in science and engineering.

The feminists went apesh*t.

He'll nevah live that one down, even though he was Clinton's Treasury Secretary.

This time in a second term always sees the incumbent's party fracturing as various varmints begin to look after their own careers. Obama is and has been getting lamer by the day.

No one wants to bare his throat for a futile political objective that has little chance of succeeding. That is why the Syria fiasco is so damaging--it tells 'rat incumbents that they have nothing to gain and a lot to lose by hooking up with the pathetic, aimless wreckage of "hope and change."

I plan on calling the Dems this week about the debt ceiling issue,,and telling them the public is awake and watching them spend money we do not have and unless they are willing to make some big cuts, they will be exposed for the Syrian terrorist supporting Obama sheep they are.

The democrats are looking ahead to 2016, they now want to be seen as the good guys, they know that every one who voted for them will forget what they were before this last issue.

"This time in a second term always sees the incumbent's party fracturing as various varmints begin to look after their own careers."

Initially, a lot of Democrats, Republicans and major leftists were on board the Obama War Monger train and were publicly backing a strike on Syria. Then suddenly, Obama publicly deferred to the leadership of Putin and everyone who backed Obama was humiliated. These people do NOT want to put themselves out in front for Obama again, as you have said. It's time for them to become the anti-Obama before it's too late.

I think a lot of Democrats are looking sideways at Obamacare now that the major Unions are furious at what is going to happen to their health care plans. The Unions are probably melting the phone lines to Democrats in the House and Senate. Not only Obama might be facing defeat, but Reid might be facing defeat in his own Senate. He is in no danger election wise, but his colleagues might not be feeling too secure going in to 2014. It's starting to get like herding cats now, and Reid must be worried. The wheels of the bus go round and round.
