BRIT HUME: No, I know. But look, I said this is -- government shutdown as a way of forcing policy when you control one House of the legislature is a loser. Now, people like Ted Cruz who Senator Ted Cruz who is one of the main leaders on this issue and certainly one of its principal spokesmen believes that the political conditions are different now from the ones that prevailed in 1995. And in some respects they are. But in one respect they're different and not in a way that's helpful to his cause, which is that the Republican Party is in much worse favor with the public than it was in 1995 when people had just installed a new House Republican majority for the first time in decades, and my sense about this is that the sort of axiom in Washington that when the government shuts down, it doesn't matter who causes it. Republicans get blamed is still in effect. And this is a very risky proposition.
Now, Cruz and company say, you can win the vote, if you win the argument. Well, they're out trying to win the argument now, and they're trying to provoke something along the lines of what happened on guns. When a popular sentiment just rose up and next thing you know, no bill passed. What remains to be seen if they can do that. I have real doubts.

Go, Cruz, GO!!
Don't let the demoncrat threats to shutdown the government deter you. They'll simply cut their own throats (and they know it).
Defund the damned economy-killing ObamaCare!!
Kill it before it kills us!!
roger ailes and rupert demand an action and hume complies.
Because the old rules guarantee the statists win. And Brit knows it.
Creating situations which provoke a shutdown....deserves a shutdown.
How I love the smell of desperation from the Left in the morning!
Brit needs to join Boehner at a retirement home soon, as in now.
Nobody threatened a government shutdown except Reid and Obama
Brit Hume is a good guy, BUT he’s a media guy also... he thinks media is ALL there is and lives in D.C. So like many of the insider GOP types he/they live in naked fear of the media blaming Republicans. FEAR IS THE TRUE LOSER! IT NEVER WINS ANYTHING!
However, Hume is correct in a way... before an Obamacare showdown conservatives (notice I didn’t say GOP)... MUST have a carefully planned media (poll tested perhaps?) strategy... to LOUDLY BLAME the O-one and DemWits for the shutdown, guerilla media war so to speak. “We funded all of government except Obamacare, if the government shuts down it will be Obama that does it”!!! Some president said years ago, “All we have to fear is FEAR itself”.
does he have twitter or email we can blast?
I agree. Obama should not use the threat of a forced government shutdown to get funding for his pet program.
Hume is dead wrong on this. People are dissatified with the GOP for the go along to get along practice that is driving the economy into the ground.
BUMP
All of those involved have preached and preached that they don’t want to shut the gubment down! They want to fund the whole operation, but not Bowmbamacare! Hume and the rest of the elite (conservative?) pundits just don’t listen!
I’m sick of the “who gets the blame” scenerio. That’s what got us all of the nightmare selling us out by Boehner. We need leaders with vision who do what’s the right thing to do and can articulate that. A budget that doesn’t fund Obamacare is the ONLY ethical way to go. Since the HOR voted something like 40 times against Obamacare, how would anything except not funding it make any sense?
There. I fixed it.
If the republicans would hold fast it wouldn’t be a week before union members and other libs would be calling democrats in congress screaming “I don’t care who’s fault it is! Fix it, damn it!”
The polls in 1995 asked “Who is responsible for the government shut down?” It didn’t ask who was to blame. That’s a big difference. Even too big for Newt to understand.
IF the house passes a bill that funds the government, but has policy in it that the Senate does not like, and the Senate refuses to pass the bill — isn’t it the SENATE that is shutting down the government over policy?
Uh, Brit Hume, isn’t OBAMA the one threatening a government shut down?
