President Barack Obama praised an agreement reached Saturday between the U.S. and Russia, saying it offers a chance to destroy Syria's huge stockpile of chemical weapons and promises to end the threat the weapons pose to the region and the world as well as the Syrian people. Obama said in a statement Saturday that the international community expects Syria to "live up to its public commitments" to hand over its chemical weapons stockpile.
Warning that the U.S. "remains prepared to act" if Syria falls short, he also cautions that more work remains even after the progress the deal represents.
Israeli President Shimon Peres says the possibility of U.S. military action if the plan fails should "teach a lesson" to Iran.
Obama ordered preparations for American airstrikes, but he decided instead to ask for authorization from Congress for military action. Then came the Russian proposal for international control of Syria's chemical weapons, and Obama asked Congress, already largely opposed to military intervention, to delay a vote.
The deal to destroy Syria's chemical weapons also offers the potential for reviving international peace talks to end a civil war that has claimed more than 100,000 lives and sent 2 million refugees fleeing for safety, and now threatens the stability of the entire Mideast.
In Congress, Republican Sens. John McCain of Arizona and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, who are among Obama's sharpest foreign policy critics and support greater U.S. assistance for Syria's rebels, said the agreement will embolden enemies such as Iran.
House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California credited the president's "steadfast leadership" for "making significant progress in our efforts to prevent the use of weapons of mass destruction."

Obama’s steadfast leadership will save us.
Huzzah to the latest news story designed to distract Americans from the leftist war on freedom in DC.
Obie should threaten to send Michelle over there to dictate their new diet.
I’m very sorry if the news regarding dear leader’s exploits on the world stage brings you discomfort.
And what hole on the golf course was he talking about "work".........Just asking.
No, that’s not it. I apologize if I reacted badly to a number of articles all on the same subject; it just appeared to me to be the same kind of deluge the media granted all the unresolved scandals that served as a smokescreen for the administration’s war on the Constitution and on the American people’s freedom.
and blame the Republicans for whatever....
So...just for fun let’s take a step back and have a look at what all this BS with Syria has gotten us? “UN Inspectors” are going onto a country we suspect of having WMDs. Russia is once again considered a “superpower.”
We’re bringing back the likes of Mohamed elBaradei and Hans Blix to entertain us for the next decade. Swell. At least we got Obastard off the “Let’s get our sailors killed” bandwagon.
I believe most of the relevant news on Obama’s many scandals and abuses of office are continuing to be posted on a daily basis. Check the topics and keyword lists. Meanwhile, we will also post the latest news on his other accomplishments and failures as well, both domestically and on the world stage. Of course, the accomplishment side is a bit slim as he has accomplished absolutely nothing that a constitution defending American president should have accomplished as to securing the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity. And he never will as he’s an America-hating, constitution-hating, liberty-hating Marxist/IslamoFascist.
“Obama cautions that work remains”
A subject he knows nothing about. Just like every day.
Obama praises deal with Russia on Syria, but cautions that work remains
What would he know about work?
Thanks for saving me the trouble of expressing the exact same thought.
