A top House Democrat and Republican differed Sunday about how the United States' effort to solve the Syria crisis swerved from a threat of military force to a possible diplomatic solution, but they agreed that Russian President Vladimir Putin is now leading the effort.
Rep. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., argued that a potential diplomatic solution couldnt have been possible without President Obama first saying the U.S. would take military action against Syrian President Bashar Assad for an Aug. 21 chemical weapons attack that killed nearly 1,500 of his own people.
We wouldnt be at this point if not for the presidents credible threat, Van Hollen, the top Democrat on the House Budget Committee, told Fox News Sunday. Lets not kid ourselves.
The shift happened in a swift turn of events starting Aug. 31 when Obama said the U.S. should launch a punitive strike, but that he also wanted congressional approval.
In the ensuing days, with Congress and the American public showing limited support for a strike, Secretary of State John Kerry seemed to float a plan for Syria to surrender its chemical weapons to the international community. Putin embraced the idea, and Kerry agreed with Russia to a tentative deal to secure Assads stockpile.

B0 is leading. From behind.
Translation....something happened that really scared Putin. That would be Obama quarterbacking a situation that could lead to WWIII.
In 6-12 months Putin will solve the problem in Syria at no cost to the US in terms of lives and money.
If he accelerates the arms shipments to Assad, maybe he can bring peace to Syria even sooner.
Van Hollen is the smoothest liar in on the RAT bench. Good thing that the LIVs don’t watch FNC. They would lap up his spin like a kitten at a bowl of milk.
Slouching from behind is more like it.
And the reason I’m stuck with this punk Van Hollen:
MARTIN OWE’MALLEY and his crazed redistricting map!
Maryland “Freak State” PING!
Back in the day in the Annapolis legislature, Van Hollen would be known as a muldoon.
My condolences on having the smirking Van Hollen as your rep. I despise him.
I am lucky enough to have Andy Harris.
