President Obama said Monday, a day before his prime-time address to the nation justifying military action in Syria, that he would prefer a diplomatic solution over a military strike and that he doesn´t think he will be able to convince a majority of Americans that it´s the right thing -- but that he can make "a strong case." (Snip) Mr. Obama also told Ifill that, "I did have those conversations" with Russian President Vladimir Putin, when asked whether he had discussions with the Russian leader about the idea of putting Syrian chemical weapons under international control.

I believe he did speak with Putin.
I'm thinking it wentsomething like this:
O; "We need to come up with a method for controlling the use of chemical weapons."
P: "Good idea. We start by you not giving any to those cannibal Moslem savages and trying to blame it on my allies. Otherwise, I'll expose your treason and give Assad some *REAL* stuff you can worry about."
O: "Gotcha. I watch that. Nice chat. Bye."

Favors Diplomatic Solution, Like favoring the ugly girl at the bar because the pretty one just told you that if you were the last man on earth she would shoot you rather than continue the species.

I think Putin and Assad played Obama like a cheap radio.
However as Brit Hume said, Obama is the short term wimmer (with low information voters)
My winners an losers here are
Short term winner: Obama
Long term winner: Putin and Russia
Biggest loser: United States
next biggest loser: John McCain
next biggest loser: John Kerry (Vietnam Vet)

Yep. And they’re not done yet. I’m certain one of Assad’s conditions in relinquishing his chemicals will be that the west stop supporting the rebels.

Just looking ahead to Putin's response I think Putin's calculation is that he prefers that obama appear to be an effective leader ... no matter that Putin has absolutely no respect for the American president.
By helping obama -- even to a small degree -- from totally discrediting himself as a leader, Putin keeps in check the Republican Party leadership because of the "opposition party's" abject fear of challenging obama when the American public considers him an effective leader (this despite obama's affirmative action credentials).
Smart move by Putin ... He has no fear of obama so he can "save him from himself" at no cost. (You can be sure Putin wouldn't pull this stunt with a man like Ronald Reagan ... or even with W!)
