A Venezuelan man has been sentenced to 5 1/2 years in prison for shooting and wounding two US military attaches at a strip club in the capital.

Carlos Mejias, 32, admitted he shot the US Embassy employees in the early hours of May 28, the attorney general's office said.

It said Mejias got into an argument with them at the Antonella 2012 club, better known as "Angelus," in the city's upscale Chacao district.

"Later he pulled out a gun and repeatedly fired at the Americans, leaving them wounded at the location," it said in a statement.

Five days later, Mejias surrendered to authorities, it said, and was charged with attempted homicide. The US Embassy in Caracas did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

One of the attaches was shot in the leg and the other in the stomach, police said. An embassy statement at the time said the injuries did not appear life-threatening.

Caracas is one of the murder capitals of the world, most such crimes go unsolved (or even uninvestigated).

We must not interfere with their private life, as this has no affect on the way they perform their duties...

I don’t care about their private lives.

Killing Americans or attempting to kill Americans always captures my attention.

I've been to a few strip-clubs, so the issue to me isn't strip clubs. But I figure that if you work for the US government and you are serving overseas, you should consider yourself on duty 24/7 and act accordingly until you return state-side.
