An enticing new study from BMC Medicine reports that people over 55 who drink a little alcohol, averaging about a glass generally of wine per day, are less likely to be clinically depressed than those who drink more and those who dont drink at all.
It turned out that low-to-moderate alcohol consumption was linked to reduced risk of depression: People who drank between two and seven glasses of wine per week seemed to derive the greatest benefit, having a third the risk of being depressed as people who did not drink.

I make enough red wine every summer to equal a 21 oz serving every day. I don’t miss my serving very often. It makes me a happy camper.

Write the authors, the studys cohort includes an older, traditional Spanish Mediterranean population, that consumed chiefly wine, and mainly in a context of socialization with family or friends. Enjoying a rich social life has been well illustrated to reduced depression risk, and could easily influence the results seen here. It is hard for me to believe that one glass of wine per day would have much effect on depression. It is easy for me to believe that daily socializing with friends would have a big effect on depression.

I’ve been told it’s just good for me. Not sure that had anything to do with health.

Too much wine gives me a nasty headache. I guess that says something about what wine does in small doses when we don’t notice its true effects.

My mother asked her doctor about a prescription for anti-anxiety medication, and her doctor said, “You’re a strong woman; you can just have wine!”

Whenever I limit my diet to caffeine, protein, and alcohol, I lose weight and I feel better. Right now I’m enjoying what I call my chicken-and-vodka diet. I’ve lost 18 lbs since June 14, and my appetite has shrunk to almost nothing. Twenty more pounds and I’ll have Sherlock cheekbones. I’ll probably have Sherlock eccentria, too, but that’s fine.

Depending on the size of the dose you just might not care if you are depressed, at least until the next dose.It takes more than just one glass these days.

Mr. GG2 would concur with that assessment as he has used your approach for many years. I on the other hand can heartily endorse 2-7 glasses of red wine per day. Depending on how deep the doo doo is from one day to the next. :-)

If your life was driving you bonkers before you lost weight, it will still be driving you bonkers afterward ... but while you’re freaking out, you can look in the mirror and say, “Hey, girl, you look thin!”
