I told anyone who would listen, and quite a few who would not, for several months in 2008 and again in 2011— when I was positively floored to see the irresponsible half of the country actually return this butt-pirate to office. The regime of Bashar al-Assad, he said, would have had no reason to use chemical weapons at a time when it had gained the upper hand in the fighting.
