On Syria, Obama says eyeing ‘shot across the bow’

President Barack Obama promised Wednesday that any U.S. military strike at Syria would be a “shot across the bow” that avoids seeing America pulled into “any kind of open-ended conflict.”

Speaking in a wide-ranging interview with PBS Newshour, Obama insisted he has not made a decision on how best to respond to the alleged massacre of civilians by forces loyal to Syrian strongman Bashar Assad using chemical weapons.

But “if, in fact, we can take limited, tailored approaches, not getting drawn into a long conflict — not a repetition of, you know, Iraq, which I know a lot of people are worried about — but if we are saying in a clear and decisive but very limited way, we send a shot across the bow saying, stop doing this, that can have a positive impact on our national security over the long term,” the president said.

Syria clearly has crossed Barry's red line in the sand so Barry proceeds to tell the world what he will do so all nations with planes on the ground in Syria, or ships near by will have time to move them....don't want to anger any one especially Bashar Hafez al-Assad or al-Qaeda, the Russians or China....Actually America should do nothing other than cutting off aid to everyone involved friends and foe's alike....Assad is in a Civil War...let that country finish it.

I predict that the Syrian situation will end up like Iraq starting with using WMDs against its own people, UN resolution after resolution, no fly zones, Syria attacking one of its neighbors (Israel?), a US lead war, regime change, ....

Actually, it probably won't get that far but “history has a way of repeating itself.” All of the same elements exist as leading up to and during the Iraq war.

At Krauthammer articulated the other day, a "shot across the bow" has a clear meaning: Stop, or the next shot will sink you.

The planned strike the admin has proposed is a hit an run with no commitment or real consequence. While I do not support involvement in Syria, I am concerned about the message (or lack of one) this kind of empty threat brings.

If the possession and use of WMDs by Syria (as stated by this admin) is not dealt with in a serious way, what message is conveyed to Iran about their nuclear ambitions?

The undocumented Tyrant Pharoah will decide.
After all, he is Nobel Prize tested, and knows
best what to do to help his MB/al Qaeda,
even if America and its allies will suffer or die.

*********

This is a very revealing statement. Obama is admitting that he was initiating, without congressional or UN approval, a military strike that would have been an open-ended conflict.

Yup. Syria crossed his bright red line, so The Commie has to shoot a bottle rocket somewhere, to show that he can’t be trifled with.

What a joke. Unfortunately, the joke’s on us.

It will certainly be perceived (and characterized) by Syria and others as weakness. They will view it as a victory.

The perception of the other regional players, namely Hezbollah and Iran (who actually determine what occurs in Syria), concerns me more.

It’s not a shot across the bow. It is sneaking into the lion’s den by yourself to kick the big cat in the balls. It won’t turn out well.

See, here’s the thing: when you telegraph that you’re going to fire a shot across the bow, it’s really not a very effecting shot across the bow.

This guy’s just pathetic. Absolutely certain that everyone is entitled to the benefit of his “thinking out loud”.

Where exactly would the “bow” of Syria be? Just curious.

Obastard really doesn’t want to seize Syria’s chemical/bio weapons. The Iraqi return addresses on them would be rather embarrassing.
