Huge riot breaks out over 'cup of noodles'

Eighteen buildings destroyed, hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage done to state property and a massive law enforcement operation, the cause; someone didn't want to share their 'cup of noodles'.  Sheriff's officials say the trouble all started at a central Florida juvenile detention facility when the losing team in a 'friendly' game of basketball refused to live up to their end of a bet. The losers apparently weren't willing to part with the agreed upon prize; their three 'cups of noodles'.

In the end, it would take about 150 law enforcement officials, including K-9 units, a SWAT team and air support to get the situation under control as other teens joined the melee. The staff also had to be evacuated from the compound as the chaos ensued.  Investigators say no juveniles escaped during the riot thankfully, but seven teens did have to be taken to a nearby hospital with injuries ranging from a broken leg to cuts and a concussion. No staffers or law enforcement officials were injured.

Staff at the Avon Park Youth Academy are forbidden from using specialty equipment, including pepper spray, which would have allowed them to deal with the fight before it escalated, authorities said. The facility is a 144-bed, moderate-risk program for males in the juvenile justice system between the ages of 16 and 19 years old. Teens are taught job skills and receive mental health and substance abuse treatment, according to a spokeswoman from the Department of Juvenile Justice. One of the damaged buildings was the office that stored all of the teens juvenile records.

Sports used to be a place where gracious behavior could be learned. Sportsmanship was a byword.

There were always exceptions (Ty Cobb was not a nice man) but I think things really changed after Muhammad Ali. Trash culture has grown and grown and now sports seems to be avenue in which the worst possible behavior comes out of people.

I didn’t particularly like ALi but he never seemed to be trashy at all....infact he seems to be a man of pretty good character and reason....

If Obama had a son, he would riot and destroy buildings over a cup of noodles.

Was it Top Ramen noodels? Nobody get my Top Ramen noodles!

Seriously, this center had no means to deal with a teenage riot and they have a 144 bed facility of 16-19 year old boys from the criminal justice system? What kind of idiot, kumbaya thinking came up with that idea? Who ever it was just cost that facility 18 buildings and probably millions of dollars in total expense.

If I was to start looking for “gracious behavior,” I wouldn’t start at a juvenile detention facility.

If teens that destroy eighteen buildings and break each others bones over a cup of noodles are "moderate-risk", I'd hate to see the high-risk teens.

My dad firmly believed that organized sports "build character;" sports helped him to get through childhood poverty, military service and his teaching/coaching career. Baseball, basketball and football were his athletic "holy trinity."

He won't even watch basketball anymore, and when I visit my parents one of us generally has occasion to comment on the latest media-designated Thug du Jour: "Sports builds character!"

(said in the most overtly sarcastic tone that can be mustered)

Without a doubt, but this was over three (3) cups of noodles.

As John Wooden said, “Sports don’t build character, they reveal it.”

My Dad would not watch an NBA game. He played in school in the 1920’s and referred to the present game as “Foul Ball and “Stuff Ball”. He did watch NFL games and called plays in the secondary as “legal assassins mugging for pay”.

This happened 6 days ago and this is the 1st I’ve heard of it. I wonder if they will change the rules for staff being able to control the kids and protect themselves.
