Walking to their car, three men armed with three guns robbed two tourists on Collins Avenue. One of them had an iPod taken....
"It's called apple picking where the subjects will look when people are talking on their iPhone or not paying attention, in this case with a firearm, and will take the phone right out of their hand and take off," Hernandez said.
Police have made eight arrests all men, ranging from 18 years old to 21. All men are charged with at least one count of armed robbery. And two of them are facing two counts of armed robbery.

They are ALL trayvon dontchaknow!
That’s a given.
Lighten up on these guys, they are just doing a little part time thieving to make up for the small payments they are getting from welfare and food stamps
This has occurred all over I expect, Seattle I know of. And I don’t much care if the obliviots that are stumbling around with their nose in their electronic cloud rather than the real world gets their bling taken away.
Thug gotta do whut a .......
Never hold your phone in your gun hand!
I believe Florida still has their “Stand you ground” law. One well placed bullet between the thugs eyes might slow down some of the wanna-be Trayvons. Shoot em and leave em lying there to be picked up with the rest of the garbage.
At the train station, at a park, at a mall, etc. I notice some folks sit with their smartphone held out in front of them with their fingers, head down focused on the screen, almost like they’re in prayer. Certainly not always paying attention to surroundings... It would seem easy to run up, grab a phone, and take off. Or, to be assaulted.
Some folks are lucky it’s only a crime of theft. Not paying attention, not watching who is around you, not being suspicious of those you don’t know, and assuming you’re somehow safe at all times is a formula for a much worse crime.
You’re right. My usual parking lot tactics include sunglasses - allows you to be looking around (not just checking out the opposite sex) without giving away your scan or who you are paying more attention to. Keep your weapon hand free, or at least be ready to drop whatever is in it. If you sense heightened danger, pay attention to that. You may want to have your hand on the weapon. Have your keys ready. Remember usually one push of a remote unlocks only the driver’s door, don’t push twice and unlock all. Check the back seat before entering. Use mirrors, window glass etc. To look for reflections and catch movement in your blind spots. Walk down the center of the lane, gives you more room to react if someone is hiding behind a vehicle. When you park, pick the part of the lot covered by cameras. Criminals look for that too and are less likely to be there. As one security expert told me, at my age it is a virtual certainty that by now I have been targeted or at least evaluated as a target many times. The fact that I haven’t been involved in an incident in a parking lot is probably due to the fact I don’t look like a very attractive target. Don’t make yourselves an easy mark. You don’t have to be paranoid, just aware and ready.
Total lack of situational awareness.
So many people just walk around clueless.
I relax when I'm in my own home or backyard - anywhere else I consider myself "on duty".
I’ve never seen the upside of standing around waiting to answer a bunch of dumb questions.
Depends on how “visable” the event was.
That's why I taped my cell phone to my gun.
“Ive never seen the upside of standing around waiting to answer a bunch of dumb questions.”
I hate the “why did you reload?” question.
Or, you can just live where there are no Amish, like I do.
I never think about crime at all in our area. It is virtually non-existent. In our subdivision, most people don’t even lock their doors. So, many folks that do live in high crime areas are there because somewhere, sometime, they decided to do so for whatever reason. Or, their family gave them some property and/or a business and they feel they have no choice. But, they do!
Example: I have a girlfriend that lives in Belaire in Houston. Just a few years ago, it was a great place to live being practically in downtown Houston. Now, the Amish have taken over. She has had her front door kicked in and fought off a would be rape. A year later she had some thugs drive by her in a car and drag her 300’ down a parking lot when her wrist got tangled up in her purse which they had grabbed. They got the purse. She went to the hospital. The ringleader had just been paroled. Another day, her car was broken into and various items were stolen. Yet, she “chooses” to continue living there in the midst of these “citizens”.
