Conrad Black’s FDR Idolatry
The Other McCain ^ | August 19, 2013 | Robert Stacy McCain

Posted on 08/19/2013 6:51:44 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

My parents were New Deal Democrats, but I grew up at a time and in a place when Republicans were extraordinarily rare. I’ve often said I never actually met a Republican until I went to college and, now that I think about it, I’m pretty sure it wasn’t until my junior year. It wasn’t until I was in my mid-30s that I became an ex-Democrat, and so I completely understand the quasi-religious reverence that Democrats have for FDR, Harry Truman and JFK. What puzzles me nowadays is that some conservatives seem to share that attitude.

National Review has published a column by Conrad Black which calls Diana West’s new book American Betrayal a “farrago of lies,” and I just don’t know what to say, except that (a) Black doesn’t seem to have read West’s book, and (b) is therefore attacking the straw man version of West’s argument, as presented by Ron Radosh.

As I said last week, the attacks by Radosh and David Horowitz have made it impossible “to view [American Betrayal] in an unprejudiced light,” and I fear that the resulting controversy will turn into one of those festering wounds akin to the attacks on Mel Bradford that prevented Bradford, a brilliant scholar, from becoming head of the National Endowment for the Humanities under Reagan. The whole neocon/paleocon feud can be traced to that episode and, however real the substance of the ideological dispute, it’s the vicious tactics I lament.....

...Black doesn’t seem to have read West’s book...

He's not the first; I predict he won't be the last, either. I've now tried to post this comment five times; all I've received is a blank page.

I can still hear the Progressive chants of my youth: “FDR Akbar”.

He must be proud of FDR's carrying in the racist tradisonts of the party of the Confederacy.

FDR rounded up hundreds of thousands of US citizens based soley on their race.

Put them in camps.

Spied on German and Italian ancestry Americans, too.

FDR (and the FED) made an ordinary depression “Great.”

The more I read about FDR’s policies and politics, the more I see Obama. A knee-jerk leftist by nature, fantasy progressive plans that didn’t work in reality, devious politics (such as his court-packing planning), attacks on business, class-warfare, and attempts to organize under government control all major markets from labor to utilities to housing.

Much smarter than BHO, though. But the average citizen with a high school diploma had much more knowledge back then than our master’s degree holders today.

Not on race, but on geography and in relation to the nation of Japan, he also rounded up thousands of whites based on connection to Germany or Italy.

When Conrad Black appeared on Laura Ingraham's radio show in 2003 to promote his doorstop of a hagiography Franklin Delano Roosevelt: Champion of Freedom (New York: Public Affairs, 2003), he seemed to have Laura mesmerized--she was uncharacteristically gushy and starry-eyed and only tossed him a few softball questions. Why does Black appeal to conservatives?

FDR rounded up hundreds of thousands of US citizens based solely on their race.

And J. Edgar Hoover, that bête noire of the Left, opposed the internment of the Japanese-Americans.

Both FDR and BHO were/are unschooled in business and economics, too. Plus both have/had strong direct communist connections and leanings. Lastly, both hate/hated the British and undermine them.

He’s still far better than any kind of feminist or homo-activist.

"Why does Black appeal to conservatives?"

He wrote and edited publications for decades advocating traditional fatherhood and family, while both political parties in the U.S.A. and all political parties in Canada did their best to outlaw traditional families. He was then pushed out of the U.K. for the same reasons that Mark Steyn was and dogged with various libels by "progressives" (libertine socialists)--many who falsely claim to this day to be conservative while infiltrating and disrupting every attempt at conservative discussion.

Wasn’t future chief justice Earl Warren the governor of CA then— he had no problem with this at all. It was smart, however to send the Nisei brave divisions over to Italy- to ensure no friendly fire deaths.

The untold story of this— from a good friend— the land taken and the businesses taken from the Japanese Americans was never returned. It was stolen. Like to know more about that, inasmuch as they had title.

Insiders spoke of Hoover’s ideas to infiltrate Japan using
trained Japanese Americans. They were utilized in codebreaking and live translation. Much faster. Hoover was no dummy and nothing like what the Left and the commies cooked him up to be.

True that mostly Americans of German descent opposed the activities of the German-American Bund.
