Undocumented students push for change to tuition policy

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- Dozens of undocumented students at Wake Technical Community College are pushing for changes to a policy that requires them to pay out-of-state tuition.

The students are forced to pay the out-of-state fees, which are nearly four times the cost of in-state tuition, even if they graduated from a North Carolina high school and have been living in the state for some time.

Five students were arrested at Thursday's protest after repeated warnings to leave the campus. Wake Tech officials said the group didn't file the proper paperwork to protest at the college. The five individuals, ranging in age from 17-27, are all charged with second-degree trespassing.

"I think it's discriminatory because they give us the opportunity already to be able to study here. We work really hard," said undocumented student Jose Rico.

Rico is one of the students who was arrested. He has been in community college for five years, lived in North Carolina for 10, and graduated from a North Carolina high school with a 3.9 GPA. Still, Rico is undocumented and forced to pay out-of-state tuition.

Meanwhile, undocumented students moved their demonstration to the highway demanding equal tuition rights........What happen to all the illegals hiding in the shadows ? Illegals are no longer asking for something, nope they will now demand it. They stage events to ensure they are front page news with...Gimme,gimme,gimme.Be a student illegally living in Mexico and student wanted to attend college there, see how fast Mexico boots you out the college and out the coutry. Is their new motto we will no longer ask for it--we shall demand it. I sure would like to know who is paying for Rico's, college education for him to be at the same college 5 years and counting..

because they give us the opportunity already to be able to study here

Actually they don't. It was forced on us by the Supreme Court decision Plyler v. Doe in 1983.

And it said nothing about secondary education.

If universities weren't run by leftists, this wouldn't be so bad. A proper university would help assimilate these immigrants and give them a political outlook consistent with traditional American principles.

Instead they'll be creating and reinforcing hatred of America.

Oh, and taxpayers get to pay for it.

In state tuition = free tuition since the undocumented students will show no income. That is what they are really after.

In Colorado, they voted illegals now only pay half what state citizens pay so at CU Boulder as an example; Out of state tuition is $38,000, in-state; $8,000 illegal $3,800

Government screwing its own people no wonder it is now an us vs them country.

Why should they respect our laws, language or culture?

Half our citizenry doesn’t

Our government welcomes this, pushing for their rights over ours.

Shopkeepers, restaurant owners, schools clamor to speak spanish while ignoring Americans waiting in line contemplating learning spanish so they can be treated with red carpet, rudely ignoring those behind them.

This is a travesty

These students are emboldened by our spineless Rick Perry and his preferential treatment of foreigners over other out of staters

Wise up

What few people understand is that state legislatures tend to provide some funding for the operation of state university systems. A private university is different....and they can pretty much charge whatever they desire, to keep some joint open.

I worked with a guy who lived in Maryland. His daughter came up just after high school graduation and demanded to attend a Virginia state college. Well....he got into a fairly financial situation, with out-of-state rates. So he decided to sell the old house, move across the border (barely ten miles) and become a Virginia resident. Course, he didn’t grasp this until it was too late....they won’t recognize you as a Virginia resident until a year has passed, so that first year of his daughter’s tuition....still was hefty.

These CRIMINAL ALIENS should enjoy the educational opportunities afforded to them in JAIL, while they are awaiting repatriation to their homelands. .

I am incensed that 5 undocumented aliens were arrested and they are still in America.

They should have been put on a bus back to wherever they came from.

I’m willing to look pass the tuition part if they have documentations that they pay the state taxes like all the locals.

but, maybe, it’s a better idea to deport all of these illegal leeches all the way south.

as a bonus, add all the welfare deadbeats (white, black, asians) in the same plane/train/truck.

If the laws on the books were actually enforced, all of these “undocumented students” (aka: illegal aliens) would have been arrested by INS, and given a free bus ride back to mexico, where they could protest their own government’s tuition policy. Of course, we all know that isn’t going to happen, because the powers-to-be want cheap workers, loyal voters, compliant servants, and people who are not attached to some old fashioned notion such as the rule of law, or national sovereignty. In short, illegal immigration is a coup in the making.

Apply what you get from this to another story..Key points are..After touring the facility, Rep. Jared Polis wrote a piece for Huffington Post advocating the reform of U.S. immigration detention facilities, “which hold tens of thousands of immigrants who were mostly picked up for trivial offenses like speeding or loitering and are now in detention at taxpayer expense for months or even years.” He said “stories of abuse, malnutrition and lack of basic health care are altogether too common in detention facilities.”

He said, “Prisons should be for criminals, not honest, productive people caught up in the byzantine morass of our broken immigration system.”

thousands of immigrants who were mostly picked up for trivial offenses like speeding or loitering.. Does anybody really believe illegals are being sent to “prisons’ for petty cimes? Does anyone actually believe this...Rep. Jared Polis . Further INTO STORY...he goes on to say... “Prisons should be for criminals, not honest, productive people caught up in the byzantine morass of our broken immigration system.”

No thanks to Perry, who so many on FR were all gaga for, Texas has had the DREAM Act for years. Sure, our governor is not much more than a figure head but he could campaigned against and vetoed the bill.
