Gov. Christie calls controversial Lonegan campaign tweet 'inappropriate'

TRENTON — Gov. Chris Christie today criticized a controversial tweet sent out by Republican U.S. Senate candidate Steve Lonegan's staff last week, calling it "inflammatory and inappropriate."

"The proof that it was (inappropriate) was that Steve ordered it taken down," Christie, who beat Lonegan in the 2009 Republican gubernatorial primary, said at a news conference in Trenton. "Steve never backs away from something controversial."

The incident unfolded Thursday night as Newark Mayor Cory Booker, the favorite to win the Democratic U.S. Senate nomination, participated in a televised debate with his three primary opponents.

During the broadcast, a Twitter account run by Lonegan's campaign staff sent out a tweet that read, "just leaked — Cory Booker's foreign policy debate prep notes."

Below it was a map of Newark, with the words "West Africa, Guyana, Portugal, Brazil" and "Middle East, Afghanistan, Pakistan, plus Bangladesh and Trinidad" scrawled on top, apparently depicting the ethnic makeup of the city's different neighborhoods.

I’m in Scott Garretts district in N.J. I receivrd a call from him tonight urging us to vote for Steve Lonegan which we will gladly do. Lonegan seems to be 100% conservative as is Scott Garrett which is pretty rare in this state.
