VIRGINIA GUN CRIME DROPS AGAIN AS FIREARM SALES SOAR
Richmond Times Dispatch ^ | 8/5/13 | MARK BOWES

Gun-related violent crime continues to drop in Virginia as the sales of firearms continue to soar, a pattern that one local criminologist finds interesting “given the current rhetoric about strengthening gun laws.”

Major gun crime collectively dropped for a fourth consecutive year statewide, while firearms sales climbed to a new record in 2012 with 490,119 guns purchased in 444,844 transactions — a 16 percent rise over 2011, according to federally licensed gun dealer sales estimates obtained by the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

The proliferation of guns occurred as the total number of major reported crimes committed with all types of firearms in Virginia dropped 5 percent, from 4,618 offenses in 2011 to 4,378 last year,

I’m not sure, but I may have seen this same article on FR a day or two ago, but a search didn’t turn up anything like it so I posted it for what may be the 2nd time.

It was unfortunate that Martin wasn’t more polite to Zimmerman.

I remember an incident in Colorado Springs a few years ago. A road rage incident where an old man and a young kid got into it. Both pulled over to the side of the road and the kid got out of his car walked over to the old man and punched the old man in the face. The old man was armed and shot the kid dead. Both were white.

It was a terrible situation for everyone.

I am not sure what my point is here. Just that I don’t know which is worse — being the shooter or the person who is shot. I have never killed anyone or for that matter anything (thank God). However, in a heartbeat, I would protect myself and my family. But the guilt would be awful.

The incident you described happened on Stemons Freeway in Dallas, not in Colorado or another on very much like it

I know of that incident.

The kids father was on the radio for an hour interview quite awhile after it happened.

After listening to the father for 30 seconds I understood why the kid did what he did (attack the old man) and why killing him was the only possible way the man was going to live. The father proved the old Texas adage that some people just need killing.

Found out they lived about 10 houses up the hill from me. Glad I never ran into them, they both must have been hell on wheels.

BTW, the shooter should not feel one bit of guilt. He should be angry that Colorado Springs didn’t give him a medal.

After hearing the fathers tirade, I felt grateful to the shooter that the kid was dead.

Could be another one there too.

The one I thought dhs12345 was referring to happened along I-25, just north of Wooodman Rd. I pointed the spot out to Mrs BE just a few days ago.

I suspect I was stalked at a gas station a couple days ago. A disheveled man came out from behind the store and tried to come around behind my car while I was pumping gas (I was isolated away from the main pumps). He was skeaky stealthy, but I saw him coming. His timing was bad though. I finished pumping gas, slipped quickly into the car, and powered-locked the doors before he got close enough to be a threat. Either seeing me secure, or seeing my "I support my local Sheriff" bumper sticker, he turned on his heel and headed into the store (going back the way he came). I turned on my dash cam and watched for a while. Sure enough, he kept peeping out to check on me. I finally left, eying him as I drove by, and alerted all I knew to not pump gas in that section of town unless they were prep'd and aware. This was in the late afternoon, but still light and not a high-crime area.

Are you still considered paranoid if they ARE out to get you?

I am an old lady, if some kid punched me in the face, I'd defend myself if I had a gun....sorry situation but the kid should have stayed in his own car and both would still be alive....I don't remember the freeper but he had a great tag line. Never start a fight with an old man, he's too tired to fight you, he'll just shoot you...there is a lot of truth to that. The way I see it, the kid started it and the old man was in danger of getting beat down...like you say, sorry situation. ‘’’’’

personally my father was a cop and the only thing he ever taught me about guns was “never point a gun at anyone unless your willing to pull the trigger and never pull the trigger unless you are totally prepared to kill. They aren't toys and you don't use one as a bluff.....

If you have to use one to protect yourself or your family, there is no reason to feel guilt, but its not easy to take another one's life, unless your a thug and they never feel guilt. We had guns all over the house and I was told to never touch them, a locked gun is useless but when my kids were small I put locks on several of my husbands hunting guns. He was P Oed but I had small children..By the time they were 12, they had passed safety tests and went hunting with their father. I have grandkids that are good with bow and arrow and guns. One of my grandsons got his first deer with a gun, the second year he got one with bow and arrow.(he was 16) his father fixes venison to drool over. Times get tough, they can live off the land if necessary...

Yup. That was it.

Like the Zimmerman case, the old man was found innocent. However, I bet that he thinks about it every day ~ 20 years later.

Obviously the kid didn't realize that he might get shot. That he could assault a person without that person defending themself.

Probably the same with Martin.

Maybe a little stupidity and arrogance. Both common traits of a young man.

Important: a person has the right to defend themselves from an attacker however stupid.

Absolutely.

Besides, how do you know if that person isn’t going to try to do worse than punch you in the face. You have no way of knowing. And after all it was the other person attacking you.
