I am supposed to donate a kidney sooner or later, I guess I’ll refuse any blood (not that it should be necessary) if this happens.
The thing to do is to donate your own blood in advance of the surgery so that it can be ready if you need some back. I’m told this is the safest way. I don’t know if that’s possible everywhere in the US, though.
Are you donating to a family member or to a good friend?
About a year ago I read that 5% of the people on the national kidney wait list are FORMER kidney donors.
That put a chill down my spin.
In the past I had thought seriously about making an altruistic donation.
I will still take the risk for friends and family, but pure altruism, sorry, that impulse has ended.
