Both pro- and anti-legalization forces in the immigration fight will be trying to make their cases to House membersespecially Republican membersduring the August recess. But heres the fundamental asymmetry in this debatethe pro-legalization forces dont really need to show up. **snip**
I doubt even these GOP leaders themselves know what theyre going to do in the coming months, or maybe even what they want to end up with. But its clear they face pressure to pass a legalization billand that the pressure is internal, not external. If they let amnesty come to a vote, it wont be because La Raza stages 360 events or Frank Sharry chains himself to the White House fence. It will be because big Republican donors, businessmen and consultants are whispering in their ears. The only force stopping them, on the other hand, is external: fear of a rebellion by the GOP caucus. And the main thing driving such a rebellion would be intense opposition from GOP voters back home.***
If those voters seem to careas polls show they dolegalization can be blocked. If not, it will go through. Its that simple.
Pro-amnesty demonstrations get a lot of press, but they arent really part of this equation. If they dont happen, amnesty still winsas long as GOP opponents dont make themselves heard.

Don't call your reps, and Boehner. They win.
Do nothing, the Marxist vision of transforming our country wins.
Do nothing, the country slips beyond recognition of what it once was, the bridge will be burned, there will be no turning back.
Good article ping.
BTTT
Is anyone organizing such?
It would be a good thing if we did something like that, but for now, during the August recess, the best thing we can do is show up and confront our congresscritters personally on the issue. We also need to call, send emails, and fax the reps, plus keep the pressure on Boehner. Like the article says, if we don't do this, the pro-amnesty caucus wins.
If everyone making $100k/year would slash THEIR budget and cut back their income to around $10k/year, or even just threaten to do so, the politicians would be far more terrified than they'd be if a crowd of a million people jammed Washington.
But no. Personal hardship for the sake of America is simply unthinkable.
Because we all have fixed obligations/responsibilities, making less money is difficult.
How about how we spend our money?
The odds are now against us. The backstabbers McCain and Graham are united with wealthy donors wo I thinkhave adeal with Dem’s to get “comprehensive corporate tax reform” in return for giving them the power(this also helps rich Dem’s. It is now a deperate struggle and I think our best chance is Boner. That means we are in a deperate struggle. If you havent join WWW.numbersusa.com.
Spoken like a Congressman!
It will be an outgrowth of the DC March for Jobs
Agreed that everyone should be letting their representatives know where you stand on the issue. The other side has a well-orchestrated and well-funded propaganda effort all over the country. August will be a key month.
I have been doing this.....I just thought there might be something on a grand scale.
The GOP Elite have decided to distract Conservatives with ObamaCare over the Summer Recess.
Just yesterday, there was an article posted here at Free Republic on ObamaCare that created a storm of passion and many comments.
Is stopping ObamaCare a time sensitive critical issue for the Republican Party and America's health care system?
Yes, absolutely.
But we cannot lose sight of Immigration Policy.
If Amnesty passes, America's entire culture and political system are going to change.
BOTH of these wars must be fought, and must be won, in the next few months.
If we fail, there will be no political future for American Conservatives.
The problem with mass gatherings and protest marches is that they really are not part of the “Political DNA” of many Conservatives.
The defining character traits of Conservatives are self discipline, individualism, and stoicism in the face of challenging circumstances.
I've been politically active since the 1960’s, and I can't think of one Conservative mass gathering that has ever made a political difference.
I think part of the reason is that many Conservatives - and specifically me - feel that that mass gatherings are somewhat dishonest.
My heart just isn't in it.
Mass gatherings are theatrical and meant to dazzle and sway the opinions of “low information voters.”
Fact is, in a democracy, Left Wing mobs, supported by a Left Wing press, will always have a political advantage over Conservatives.
Conservatives are heart & blood of our forefathers who forfeited their lives and livelihood for this nation.
My heart is in in!
There have been conservative mass gatherings through the years that have had extreme significance.
Every year hundreds of thousands gather in DC for LIFE.---regardless whether their true numbers are acknowledged or reported by the press, they do this year after year, knowing full well their efforts may not have fruition this year or this side of Heaven.....but they will be noted as standing for what is right and righteous ....
...and someday (& we see seeds of this even now).....LIFE of the unborn once more will be regarded as a sanctity & worthy.
We can't give up on our beloved America.
The rule of law IS a guiding force in our society whether those that rule us....YES RULE US, IT SEEMS....believe in it or not.
It's still a right, we still have a Constitution, and we can't give up!
We cannot, should not cede this great land ever, and especially without a fight!....or a mass gathering of the millions!
I'm tired....weary....disillusioned....BUT IT'S NOT OVER and WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE IF WE DON'T GIVE UP!...LORD WILLING
God bless and keep you.
Indeed!...Thank-you !!!!
I participated in the September 12, 2009. Tea Party march on Washington. It made a difference in the results of the 2010 midterms and is still having a major political impact.
Yes, I completely missed that.
You are correct.
That swung the 2010 election.
But, extremely poor turnout for Blacks and Hispanics helped, too.

I actually wrote a reference to Right To Life rallies (which can be awesome and huge) in my first draft comment, but I decided to delete it.
Partly, because they have a unique solemnity and moral overtone that you just don’t find in any other kind of political demonstration.
And, partly because, after 40 years, they have had very limited impact on abortion laws and Roe v. Wade.
I certainly do not mean to suggest that Conservatives should give up on critical issues.
I just don’t have the same level of confidence in large public demonstrations that you do.
