Jefferson County commissioners on Wednesday were informed the sales tax in the county will be going up 0.25 percent on Sept. 1.
The state Legislature voted to increase the state sales tax to 5.75 percent. Coupled with the county's 1.5 percent sales tax, purchases made in Jefferson County will have a 7.25 percent sales tax.
County Commissioner Tom Gentile expressed some displeasure with the announcement.
Gentile said the state's budget surplus has grown to $1.5 billion, the state has taken money away from local governments and then is raising the state sales tax.
The Ohio Department of Taxation is mailing postcards to all taxpayers and sending out e-mail alerts to businesses.

I did a Yahoo news search and I could only find articles in a couple of smaller local papers like this one.
Is there some reason the larger papers arent covering this tax hike?

They will, when its a fait accompli
It’s already 7.5% in Montgomery County. Has been for quite a while.

A state tax increase and its getting almost no mention in the press, wow.
Isn't Illinois now over 10 percent?
I’ve received my notice last week.
Gee...glad we don’t have a bunch of tax hiking liberals running this state. Oh...wait.
The sales tax is going up. The state inheritance tax was abolished this year. And income taxes are going down.
Kasich ran for governor promising to eliminate the income tax in favor of a sales tax. He is not there yet and doing so gradually but it is a step in the right direction.
I’ll be just as happy when that big government liberal goes back to barking at store clerks and flight attendants.
That was my main point. Considering that this is a Republican administration and not a single mention in the Lib Dailies.
