A California company was given more than $100 million in taxpayer funds by the federal government with few strings attached to establish a network of electric car charging stations that is fraught with problems, according to a government audit.
All this, despite weak demand by the American public for electric cars.
While President Obama has pledged to get 1 million electric cars on U.S. roads by 2015, a new report by the Department of Energys inspector general found that Americans aversion to electric vehicles and loose department supervision led to stalling the charging network which cost taxpayers more than $135 million.

The irony of the electric car is that certainly in many cases gets re-charged by electricity generated by fossil fuel. So, where’s the payoff?
I see these “electric car charging stations” around town. It doesn’t way that only electric cars can park there so I do. I have a few electric elements in my car. Most of the time, the places are left open. I have a small car which is not commonly recognized so I’m guessing no one is going to notice.
I am not paying taxes next year. F em.
These parasites pay no liquid fuels taxes yet tear up the roads maintained by those who do....
Keep in mind also, our two biggest car makers to use them also given our money are gone now too.
New sites will add to the 40+ stations already operating or planned around the state
That is why these folks are Environuts -- they make no sense in what they do...
We have new state laws that just went into effect that non-electric vehicles can’t use those spaces and not only that, but also electric vehicles which are not charging at the time!
When walking by the charging space at a government building near here I always have an impulse to take a pee on the charger, but realize that might not be a good idea.
According to the info at the site above, Oregon has taken note of a few folks trying to avoid the gas tax and has a alternative per mile tax for EV's to go into effect soon.
A tax on walking or riding a bike will probably follow.
I’m for tax reductions for anyone, anywhere, at anytime, regardless of reason. Starve the beast.
PA is talking about raising the gas tax in part because vehicles are becoming more efficient and in part because the electrics aren’t paying anything.
A mileage based tax would hit everyone across the board. And yes, I’d be for tamperproof odometers and annual inspections of bicycles. A lot of transportation $ goes toward creating bike lanes.
