The Homeland Security Department has lost track of more than 1 million people who it knows arrived in the U.S. but who it cannot prove left the country, according to an audit Tuesday that also found the department probably wont meet its own goals for deploying an entry-exit system.
The findings were revealed as Congress debates an immigration bill, and the Government Accountability Offices report could throw up another hurdle because lawmakers in the House and Senate have said that any final deal must include a workable system to track entries and exits and cut down on so-called visa overstays.
The government does track arrivals, but is years overdue in setting up a system to track departures a goal set in a 1996 immigration law and reaffirmed in 2004, but which has eluded Republican and Democratic administrations.

That’s OK, John McCain sez technology will eventually solve this king of problem.
I don’t know how “Homeland Security” is allowed to get away with this. When people here carry on about illegal immigrants sneaking over the Southern border, what they are ignoring is the fact that most of the immigrants who have committed terrorist attacks against us came here legally, on visas where they theoretically had to get prior vetting, and then overstayed their visas without any problem or even any attempt being made to find them. And the ones that didn’t overstay their visas either became citizens (such as the Tsarnaev brothers) before their attacks or were ignored even when they were contacting terrorists and “Homeland Security” theoretically knew where they were because they were still on valid visas.
My contention all along is that we have to look at the LEGAL immigrants we have here, that is, our standards for admitting them, and then our way of ensuring that they indeed belong here and are behaving themselves once they get through the door.
But because they’re mostly Muslims or from Muslim countries, they’re a politically protected class and we can’t look at them very closely. It’s not fair to Muslims, you know, just because they happen to commit 99.9% of the terrorist attacks in this country (and most of those in the world).
If they were members of a Tea Party organization I bet the IRS could find them lickity split.
Flophouse USA
Just a few months ago the government gave hundreds of thousands in food stamps, welfare, and other tax paid prizes to the marathon terrorist.
It was also discovered Bush's Homeland Security Boss Chertoff, had people who'd entered the country illegally, wandering around the inside of his private residence....During war time.

My son has lived in London for over 20 years and I have been there several times. When I get off the airplane, I have to go through customs/immigration and my passport is checked to see who I am and that I'm not wanted somewhere. Then, I have to write the address where I am going and when I am leaving. The address is checked to affirm it is a legal address and I have to identify who I am visiting so they have my son's name and address. I guarantee you if I overstay my time, they will find me. Unless they lose all that documentation, they know who I am and when I am leaving.
So, how could Homeland Security lose people enough they don't know who they are or where they are? That makes no sense - they should at least have the documentation made with those people entered the country. Where is that documentation with names?
If we can't do that in this computer world, Homeland Security needs get out of the passport/immigration/customs business and someone else get the responsibility for people coming in. Geesh, what crap.
You forgot that we will also offer them SNAP, Medicaid/Obamacare, Section 8, TANF (now AFDC again), and other benefits, just for crossing our borders. What a great idea
In business, you fire people long before things get this out of hand, in government, you hire more idiots because you have lost control of your business.
Government needs to be held responsible. Defund Homeland Security, because they are making the “Homeland” insecure.
Close down the Justice Department because they are unjust, fire everyone in congress who “voted for a bill to see what is in it”.Defund the Government till it comes up with a realistic budget. Its just common sense. Obviously the people currently in charge are massively corrupt and incompetent.
” It was also discovered Bush’s Homeland Security Boss Chertoff, had people who’d entered the country illegally, wandering around the inside of his private residence..”
I used to call this guy “the stooge”
Bush too.
I gotta get me one of those (hats). I might not need any sunscreen at all to go fishing!
Oh, I forgot, no fishing until I get caught up with work — that’ll probably be in a couple years!
Yabbut, they want to record your conversations with your Aunt Tillie...
A million here, a million there. What difference does it make? Just another phony scandal, right?
