Federal 'nudge squad' led by 20-something gears up to change Americans' behaviors – for our own good

Mara Shankar
Yalie
20-something
The New Boss of Everything

Maya Shankar is a senior policy advisor at the White House Office of Science & Technology Policy. Her mandate is to supervise the organization of a federal government 'nudge squad' that will subtly change the behaviors of bureaucrats -- and the rest of us.

When does a nudge become a shove?

Americans may find out, as the federal government is setting up a 'behavioral insights team' to tinker with the way we accomplish everything from saving money and staying in school to losing weight and becoming more energy-efficient.

The Obama administration's grand plans for behavioral science....

Cass Sunstein, formerly the Director of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs at the Office of Management and Budget, is regarded as the godfather of modern government paternalism

In the UK, a series of bulletins sketch out how broad the approaches have become. They have tackled wasting food, cheating on exams, job-seeking schedules, skimping on charitable giving, drinking milk, morning commutes, choosing sources of energy and sticking to New Year's resolution.

'We are already working with over a dozen federal departments and agencies on newly-designed behavioral insight: the Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, Veterans Administration, Treasury, Social Security Administration, Housing and Urban Development, and the United States Department of Agriculture.'

[All] may not bode well, given that the NYC ban on large-size fizzy drinks has officially fallen flat.

An appeals court ruled Tuesday that the city's Board of Health didn't have the constitutional authority to limit how much soda can go into a restaurant's cup.

The ruling will set a precedent that opens up such government interventions to [challenges] when bureaucracies try to tweak what ordinary people do, and how they do it.

Insulting...

Aggravating...

Enraging!

Worth your time: go to the link and read the whole maddening thing. This arouses my total detestation and my will to resist, refuse and revolt.

Pass this on to others with a rebel spirit and a sense of humor. We need to ridicule this to death.

This is so juvenile a program, I thought this was satire. What in the heck is wrong with these people? They are not even ashamed. I mean, what are we, a joystick pleasure for our rulers?

Good luck on that, BO. This government absolutely has no respect in vast areas of this country.

This effort to have university slugs telling working people what to do and how to think will be the most devastating failure in the history of American pollitics.

If Mrs. Chandler couldn’t change my behavior in nearly 40 years, the Federal Government doesn’t have a chance.

Nudge our politicians to honor and follow the constitution please.

Nudge our representatives to stop gauging their success on the amount of grants they bring back to their district or state. Nudge them instead to measure their worth by how many dollars they cut from the budget and how many dollars they leave in the hands of the private sector.

They could hire some slugs from UC Santa Cruz....

The Banana Slug, a bright yellow, slimy, shell-less mollusk commonly found on the redwood forest floor, was the unofficial mascot for UC Santa Cruz coed teams since the university's early years. The students' embrace of such a lowly creature was their response to the fierce athletic competition fostered at most American universities.

telling working people what to do and how to think

It might work on one of the working people, but not both.

I thought it was in response to the Irvine Aardvarks.

I cannot wait t’il they try that. Even the military has not such stupid stuff.

What we need in terms of nudge is less viagra for our power nut politicians and their “whiz kids”.

She can nudge single women to not have babies outside of marriage.

She could nudge women considering abortion, to bring the baby to term and let families adopt them.

She could nudge men to marry women and create families instead of leaving a trail of fatherless children.

She could nudge those scamming the Social Security disability system to stop their thievery and pay the money back.
