Life on the road can be dangerous for professional athletes. Unfortunately for Texas Rangers reliever Tanner Scheppers, he found that out the hard way after the team arrived in Cleveland on Thursday night for their weekend series against the Indians.
According to Drew Davison of the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram, Scheppers was attacked by a group of young males in downtown Cleveland after going out for a food run. The assault took place about two blocks away from the team's hotel, and as a result Scheppers was unavailable to pitch on Friday night after suffering a laceration near his left eye and experiencing headaches.
He was, however, cleared for action on Saturday, so it appears the attack won't have any lasting effects. That's good news for everybody, but especially for the Rangers. In 46 appearances this season, Scheppers has posted a 1.74 ERA and a 1.88 K/BB ratio. Those outstanding numbers helped earn him a spot in the American League's Final Vote for the All-Star game.

Damned Tea Partiers no doubt.
That’s what you get for building a ballpark on the ocean, Oil Can Boyd regarding Cleveland.
Hell, we weren't even treated to the normal codeword of "youths" to describe the attackers.
Ah, good. So all's well that ends well.
I certainly hope these "young males" got that out of their system.
A group of young men minding their own business walking home from buying Skittles saw this creepy Cracka and just knew he needed a beat down to put him in place.
He didn’t even file a police report, he learned his place.
//sarcasm
It's a darn good thing this didn't happen to some hapless citizen who is not as physically fit as Schippers.
Are they suggesting that a hotel that has a major league team staying there doesn’t have either a late night cafe or room service? I don’t believe it. Something hinky about this story
Too bad Scheppers can't hit, because none of the other Rangers can.
Have you never left your hotel, to do a food run? It’s pretty common. Don’t start blaming the victim.
I'll take a crack. He was several sheets to the wind. Hence, his athletic skills were compromised and his judgment numbed.
Pretty much describes the rest of the team, just like their coke-addled Manager.
I am not blaming anyone. When I have arrived at a hotel late at night (late night food run was the story’s description) I have NEVER left the hotel. Cleveland has the same type of reputation as Baltimore. In neither city did I leave the hotel a night.
There is something called common sense and a small bit of caution. It is not as if these cities have pristine reputations....haven’t for years
The Rangers have been Mastersoned.
The “Knock-Out Game” hits the MLB. Will the people ever be told that the “young males” are young BLACK males, and ALWAYS are?
Last time I stayed in a Hooliday Inn, and its been a while, they charged me $12 for a burger and fries.
