the middle and upper class Egyptians were contemptuous of it and saw it as a political statement by the poor and the rebellious to look pious and rebuke “the system” from which the poor felt disenfranchised

kinda like hoodies!

In Turkey, Ataturk knew what he was doing when he banned the veil

who’da thunk that 20 years later all the women in Egypt would be going under the veil for their own and their family’s protection from zealots and islamic Bolsheviks in their own society

In all societies, if the underclass is allowed to grow, it will eventually decide to seize power and try to enslave the middle class. Underclasses need continual pruning.
