Mysterious hum driving people crazy around the world
nbcnews ^ | 26 Jul 2013 | Marc Lallanilla

It creeps in slowly in the dark of night, and once inside, it almost never goes away.

It's known as the Hum, a steady, droning sound that's heard in places as disparate as Taos, N.M.; Bristol, England; and Largs, Scotland.

But what causes the Hum, and why it only affects a small percentage of the population in certain areas, remain a mystery, despite a number of scientific investigations...

Oh, for goodness’ sake. That’s the Earth’s biological clock ticking. If Earth doesn’t have another moon soon, it will probably never have one. Look for a date with Mars. (Oh, Earth’s probably getting irritable and having hot flashes. Look for anther Mt. St. Helens.)

I have been hearing the hum too, for years...and the voices. So, what’s the big deal.

Okay, this is weird: I clicked on the youtube video and heard absolutely nothing, but my 24 year old daughter, sitting about 10 feet away said, "Wow! What is that hum?"

She had no idea I played the video. I paused it without saying anything and she said it went away, then clicked on "play" again and she said "There it is again! What is that? Where is that hum coming from?" This is the honest truth.

It’s called infrasonic noise or sound. It is the effect from ground waves or vibrations, not air waves, and it is low frequency which may account for the hum or whatever. You feel it as much as you hear it.

Definitely working on Taos! I was through there this week and the flat plain West of town looks like junk trailer city and a clown town!

I for one have been hearing a hum in my head for the last 6 months... Which was alright because I was tired of the voices... Until the hum is now to the tune of It’s A Small World.... Someone please shoot me...

My 26 year old son just walked in and I clicked on the video. He noticed it. I still can’t hear it. I’m 59.

Only about 2 percent of the people living in any given Hum-prone area can hear the sound, and most of them are ages 55 to 70...

Younger people with better hearing can't hear it but us old geezers can. Interesting. Maybe it's something in their water, food supply, or air that screws up their hearing over a long time.

I don't hear a hum, just a gentle hiss from listening to too many chainsaws, snow blowers, and riding mowers without hearing protection.

This particular hum sounds to me like it could be the wind going over a rock formation in the mountains. My wife and I had an Acura that generated a similar noise when we were driving down the road at about 50 mph. It turned out to be a defective windshield being hit by the road wind.
