Republican Health Care Panic
New York Times ^ | July 25, 2013 | by Paul Krugman

Posted on 07/26/2013 8:20:33 AM PDT by Oldeconomybuyer

Leading Republicans appear to be nerving themselves up for another round of attempted fiscal blackmail. With the end of the fiscal year looming, they aren’t offering the kinds of compromises that might produce a deal and avoid a government shutdown; instead, they’re drafting extremist legislation — bills that would, for example, cut clean-water grants by 83 percent — that has no chance of becoming law. Furthermore, they’re threatening, once again, to block any rise in the debt ceiling, a move that would damage the U.S. economy and possibly provoke a world financial crisis.

Yet even as Republican politicians seem ready to go on the offensive, there’s a palpable sense of anxiety, even despair, among conservative pundits and analysts. Better-informed people on the right seem, finally, to be facing up to a horrible truth: Health care reform, President Obama’s signature policy achievement, is probably going to work.

And the good news about Obamacare is, I’d argue, what’s driving the Republican Party’s intensified extremism. Successful health reform wouldn’t just be a victory for a president conservatives loathe, it would be an object demonstration of the falseness of right-wing ideology. So Republicans are being driven into a last, desperate effort to head this thing off at the pass.

Democrats are conducting themselves without compromise in the looting of America, refusing to stay within legal debt limits and refusing to trim the fat off their overblown and wasteful programs..............

Why can’t we get someone to write the conservative side?

I did not read the article. It’s Paul Krugman. I just wanted to point out that he is a highly esteemed idiot.

From the article...
“President Obama’s signature policy achievement, is probably going to work”

Since Krugman has been wrong on just about every prediction, I’m guessing this will be another. Even the WH may not think it will work by delaying the employer mandate. I’m guessing Krugman has never read the law. It seems those who have read it, including a few Democrats after they passed it, agree it’s a coming train wreck

However, the rest of the country and Krugman may have different definitions on the definition of “it will work.”

Maybe if Republicans hadn’t already fully funded Obamacare twice via continuing resolutions they wouldn’t now be so “desperate.”

that have no chance of becoming law

It is funny how the republicans that won't compromise are intransigent, but not apparently the left who, Krugman admits, would NEVER consider compromise on anything. Why can't a cut become law? All it takes is a few democrats to decide funding 90% of the government is more important than some special-interest grant that they promised to pay back their donors.

And we fear Obamacare because it is going to destroy our health care. Something Krugman probably doesn't have to worry about, because as a liberal "intellectual", he is part of the 1% that can afford to pay for whatever health care he needs.

This may be one of the biggest socialist democratic frauds going. He has not been right on any issue I can think of, including his moronic support of the AGW scam that has since collapsed faster than WITHOLDER can say GET WHITIE.

What “kinds of compromises that might produce a deal” has Obama offered?

I believe his exact words were, “You Christians will kneel at the feet of the sons of Islam, and do as they tell you.”

It’s the negotiating style developed and perfected in the Middle-East.

Health care reform, President Obama’s signature policy achievement, is probably going to work.

Egalitarianism and making something free or nearly free to the individual and chargeable to the group as a whole is to make consumption of the individual virtually costless, which leads to the abolition of cost in the spending of income, which leads individuals to demand everything.

The increase in demand leads to:

1) an overall increase in cost of medical care as a whole to the taxpayers.
2) a decrease in quality and quality of medical care supplied by doctors to individuals.

The bureaucratizing of medicine and the control of doctor's fees and treatments turns doctors into slaves, and ultimately makes medicine unattractive as a profession, which will lead to a decrease in the supply of doctors and a doctor shortage.

To control costs, the government will have to resort to death panels, a prohibition of many procedures, and opposition to medical advances, in order to save money.

What you describe is basically similar in many respects to what has been happening to medical costs, since LBJ injected the Federal Government into Medicare. The deeper the Feds get into Medical Services, the worse things will get.

Panacea Or Death Potion.

People need to understand, the limited Federal Government that the founders provided was not only the best way to preserve Liberty. It was also the least impediment to solving all other domestic problems.

re: “Better-informed people on the right seem, finally, to be facing up to a horrible truth: Health care reform, President Obama’s signature policy achievement, is probably going to work.”

The BIG lie. I do note, however, that Krugman say’s “Health care reform. . .is ‘probably’ going to work.” “Probably going to work?” That doesn’t sound like a ringing endorsement. Not a lot of confidence there on Krugman’s part.

And, when you take into account all this administration’s failures it sounds like Krugman spitting into the wind (or in our faces):

- high unemployment remains (especially among minorities)
- businesses down-sizing full-time jobs to part-time jobs in order to avoid being bankrupted by Obamacare
- healthcare costs continuing to rise
- price of gasoline gravitating between $3.50 to $5.00
- destroying our military might through suicidal ROE thus lowering soldier morale
- refusing to enforce immigration and border control law
- unprecedented increase in surveillance of American citizens
- ignoring citizens’ First Amendment right to freedom of religion/conscience
- actively attempting to destroy citizens’ right to keep and bear arms, and on and on.

Of course, as I and others have mentioned, all the above could be viewed as resounding successes if Obama’s goal was to destroy America as founded. In that he has been terribly effective.

And the good news about Obamacare is, I’d argue, what’s driving the Republican Party’s intensified extremism.

I wish Republicans would learn to express issues in simple terms and refuse to let opponents define them.

Suppose Bob would be willing to forgo some expensive luxuries in exchange for his being able to take advantage of the latest medical technologies in the event he gets sick. If Bob does forgo those luxuries, would be fair or unfair if that meant that he could receive better care than someone who in otherwise-identical circumstances chose not to do so?

Life is full of trade-offs. Communism/socialism doesn't eliminate them. All it does is ensure that they're weighed by those in power, rather than those who will have to deal with their effects.
