It's a basic human act, and it says a lot about society -- and the state of homelessness in Santa Cruz in the year 2013 -- that a discussion about keeping people from doing it in public places is even warranted. But here we are.
The problem: An increasing amount of human waste is being found along the San Lorenzo River levee and in downtown-area open space. People relieving themselves in public spots is apparently a growing problem in the city, one that has residents who regularly walk the levee path and business owners along Front Street -- many of whom have back doors that open to the levee -- absolutely fed up. Who can blame them?

“Yu Stin Ki Pu.”
I didn’t know that the Asiana pilots were staying in Santa Cruz.
Ripped from a 19th C. missionary hymnal:
“Though every prospect pleases, and only man is vile...”
Every neighborhood has a “yard pooper.” In my neighborhood it was Mark White. Sounds like Santa Cruz has quite a few.
I read that many cities can’t have fountains anymore because people use them as toilets.
Welcome to the new, classy, wonderful third world USA!
Keep Santa Cruz squalid.
Didn’t realize until Hurricane Sandy just how annoying even little cuts and scrapes, dry lips and cold sores are when hot water is at a premium.
Well, if you turn your city into a "haven" for the homeless and have lax drug and public vagrancy laws, this happens. The homeless AREN'T "just like me and you." They are mentally ill, addicted and care little for their environment (and I say this as someone who does charity work with the homeless every week).
Santa Cruz officials say they hope to address the problem by installing by September a fenced-in portable toilet that will be open 24 hours a day near the levee
The only thing the portable toilet will do is give drug addicts a place to buy drugs out of sight of the police and give the homeless a place to sleep and have sex.
“Welcome to another liberal paradise Santa Cruz, California “
Bingo - that’s the truth and the issue - a Liberal paradise.
UC Santa Cruz is a hotbed of liberals, who made it a turd-world paradise.

Seemed like a good idea at the time, sir.
Mai Raff Rontime!
Just give each of the homeless a van to live in (down by the river), and the problem will be solved.
Because you're racist.
Didn't you get the memo?
